heya, welcome to my gemlog! this isn't really a first entry. i started this capsule half a year ago and i've posted things before, but i've been inconsistent and i wanted a fresh start.
the pandemic's been really hard-lived for me. every day feels like a fight... anyway, i'm always changing things in my close environment, and trying to get better. it's more like a balancing act tbh though
happy new year! have you made your resolutions?
i don't think year resolutions work for me. instead, i've been doing seasonal "themes". last summer was dopamine detox, autumn was mental health. this winter is focus. i have the bad habit of being interested in too many things at once, so i burn out easily without getting far. i get a lot of decision fatigue too. so this winter, i'll try to focus on what's really important to me.
did you know the icelandic word for computer, tölva, is a portmanteau of tala (digit) and völva (seer)?
anyways, my main goal with computers now i guess is to have something that's more reliable and takes less energy to maintain. most automated distros won't work though. things break all too often and it's so hard to fix them because they are so complex. so i prefer having fewer moving parts.
i've been on void for over a year, and i really like it. i can say it's my favorite linux experience so far. in october though i decided to move to freebsd, but i never followed through.
one of the main reasons was my external ssd, with luks/ext4. i'd need a vm to use that in freebsd, and the idea of having to set that up turned me off. i've instead changed my backup system so that i can recover anything i need with just an internet connection and a few secrets. that worked well and i'm happy with it!
i put freebsd on my second laptop to play around. it's comfy so far! i'll try using it more and maybe switching over eventually, and reformat my ssd to use geli instead of luks.
my idea of resting is learning a foreign language. i know, it's dumb. i'm supposed to recover because i'm tired, and all i end up doing is using my brain more. anyways, that's how i've been spending my time for the past few months. i was learning faroese for one month, then moved back to icelandic. it's kind of become one of my main activities after that, and it's really fun!
i really love gemini, but i don't know what to put up here most of the time. since it's a personal space, i guess there aren't really any rules. i just changed the layout of the capsule again and translated the main page from jp back to en. i might change it back again... it's a mood thing lol.
i also haven't been on xmpp so i took it off the page. if you want to talk to me, please use email or matrix <3
