I have a Japanese maple in my garden. The leaves are a deep purple-ish red. They form layers, a bit like a cedar. It makes a pleasing contrast to all the shades of green, and it spreads toward the top, so although it's not huge, you can sit under it. Lovely.
When the wind ruffles it, the leaves shimmer. Their stems must be unusually flexible. Sometimes if the wind hits one leaf just right, it flips up and shows you its underside which is much paler, making it stand out among the dark top sides of the others. The leaves have long lobes, so they look like hands. When they flip up it looks like the tree is waving at you.
