Briain Kelly, 26 May
On June 22, Galway Swimming Club is proud to be hosting the Longest Day
Swim 2024 down the river Corrib.
This charity river swim gives participants the chance to swim down the
fabulous River Corrib, passing many of Galwayâs favourite landmarks
including the University of Galway, Menlo Castle, Steamboat Quay and
swimming under the Quincentennial Bridge.
This is a not to be missed opportunity to see Galway from a unique
perspective!
The inaugural running of the event was in 2019, since when it has steadily
grown and is now a key race on the Galway Open Water Swimming Calendar.
With previous competitors including Ex-US Olympic swimmers Gunnar Bentz,
Peter Vanderkaay and Davis Tarwater, the event has earned praise for its
charity support and welcoming atmosphere!
The Longest Day Swim is a timed, open water river swim for over 18âs which
attracts all standards of open water swimmers and triathletes: from fun
swimmers to elite athletes, all are welcome.
The event aims to promote awareness of the positive physical and mental
health benefits of swimming, whilst raising crucial funds for this yearâs
charity partner, Claddagh Watch.
There are two swims available, with each distance having Male/Female and
Skins/Suits categories. A 4km swim starting at Glenlo Abbey and a 2.5km
version starting at the slip in Dangan.
Swimmers will have to navigate their way across the Corrib from their
starting points and then head downstream to the finish line at Steamersâ
Quay (Woodquay just above the Salmon Weir).
The 4K swim starts from The Glenlo Abbey Hotel, while the 2.5K swim starts
from NUIG Dangan. Both swims finish up at the Commercial Boat Club at
Waterside, Woodquay.
Participants will get a GSC âLongest Day Swimâ swimming hat, a Longest Day
Swim 2024 gift, a goodie bag filled with water, fruit etc, some tasty food
after your swim where you can relax at the Awards ceremony, as well as
supporting the GSC and Claddagh Watch charity.
