Anyone here read Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy?

I have read the first book in the trilogy (Annihilation). Wasn’t bad, but isn’t exactly my type of sci-fi.

Yeah it’s not for everyone I personally loved it though

I've also only read the first one, Annihilation. I *quite* liked it, silly that I haven't yet grabbed the other two. VanderMeer's approach to cosmic horror is very appealing to me.

Yes! Very much my type of thing. Though when I read the first book I didn't like the writing style very much at all. But I got used to it eventually and really enjoyed the other two. I also enjoyed Bourne and Dead Astronauts (also by VanderMeer). I do think, though he claims otherwise, that it was basically a combination of HP Lovecraft in general with Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Stugatsky (one of my favorite novellas).

@sloum didn’t know of the last authors you mentioned, I’ll have to check them out. that’s really surprising, most people like annihilation better than the other 2. I love them all personally. Borne I liked but I don’t think it was honestly as good as the southern reach trilogy, probably because it’s more character driven and I don’t think that’s Vandermeer’s strength. I have DA but haven’t read it yet. Heard it’s insane, haha. Are there any books by Stugatsky you recommend?

@yvonne the other 2 are great. authority is more of a slow burn, but it’s cool in its own way. think the same horror as annihilation but transmitted through the medium of bureaucracy.

@fearghuis I've mostly just read 'Roadside Picnic' by the Stugatskys. It is great. I really should delve into more of their stuff. I was mixed on Dead Astronauts. Some of it was great... it was always right on the edge of being what I wanted it to be, but never quite getting there.
