This might be slightly off topic, but if you could have a device to carry with you that had the exact features you want, and none of what you didn't want, what would it be?

My list would be:

voice phone calls

text messages

voice dictation for numbers/texts

no touch screen

direction buttons only,

no keyboard of any kind!

black and white screen

e-ink display

always-on screen with time/notifications

That's my dream machine. :-)

My thoughts on dictation are that if you are typing something super-private in a public place, you should really be going someplace private first. Being completely isolated from people who are right next to you on the bus or elevator is a bad aspect of modern society. So dictation only would be cool.

If I could basically have my Sony XZ1C, but with modern internals, a killer camera, a stylus, and the jogwheel from my Sony Clie, that'd be what I'm looking for from this kind of handheld device. Well, and Android would need to not be what it is, but I'm mostly worried about hardware here.

@satch Oh yeah, I also want calendar, ebooks, local music, headphones plug. Syncing only by cable. Huge local storage. I don’t need local editing. I need to add reminders, but maybe those could be text messages to myself. Typing and organizing would all be at a computer for me.

With a super simple OS, no web browser.
