I know that the small internet isn't meant to replace the world wide web, but I'm seriously thinking of trying to go without the WWW for a while. I'm just tired of how constantly vigilant you have to be. Currently, the only thing tying me to it is easy access to information, particularly regarding mathematics and programming. But I live within walking distance of a library. So I wonder if it's worthwhile as an experiment.

@prk Ah yes, but therein lies a simple yet first-party solution, albeit given a slight compromise (one way AND the other): use the mobile version of the site. I know there's still some java involved, but if you use the barebones mobile text only version of a site it'll load in much like a gopher-like or lynx format would (in the vein of nokia and nextel phones circa 03-05) yet retain the important parts you'd need from it w.o a buncha invasive scripts tryna inject your screen w/ garbage ass nonsense. · 11 months ago
@ruby_witch Being totally honest, I don't actually miss youtube that much. I think after I upgrade my hard drive I'm gonna download all the music I can't find elswhere (wild that youtube somehow became the Multimedia Everything Site) and maybe a few of the best YTPs since those are really the only two things keeping me on youtube these days. · 11 months ago
@userfxnet problem is, most of the WWW rely on JS crap nowadays. Most pages won't even load unless you tun at least "local" JS,. As for profesionnal usage, it's plain impossible... I miss ol' static web :'( · 11 months ago
@mathpunk The Brave browser pretty much fixes the YouTube ad issue, that's my solution. Works the same on mobile too FYI. YouTube is really my main reason why I'm still attached to the http-verse.There are ways around it like yt-dlp and yewtube (which is still http but better), but I haven't travelled all that much down those paths yet. · 11 months ago
@danrl I actually quit youtube when they implemented their anti-adblocker policy. youtube did the hard part for me: I will still habitually open yt or click links my friends send me, but then it opens to that "turn off your adblocker" warning and I just close the page · 11 months ago
@mathpunk Going cold turkey will be hard. I’ve started to reach for my Gemini browser instead of my web-based sources. So for me, it’s a gradual process. Don’t forget:

do it! i still use the web. but only when other means don’t get me the results. realized i won’t miss much. to the contrary, i discovered more interesting things in my local library. not popular, but interesting. youtube, otoh, is still pretty dominant in my life. i learn a lot there by watching other people do construction. it seems to be the only way for me to get an idea of what certain physical tasks look like that i just can’t find in books. · 11 months ago
I'm on Gemini for 90% of my personal internet usage. · 11 months ago
@sirwilburthefirst I definitely think I'm going to look for things on the smallweb first, at the very least. · 11 months ago
@userfxnet To be totally honest, I forgot about lynx and gemini proxies. Thank you for reminding me. I'm kind of curious what it's like to live without HTTPS, so I might do it for a week, just as an experiment. After that I definitely think lynx will be the way to go. · 11 months ago
I mean, if you really need to, there's the lynx browser that's purely terminal and won't expose you to any invasive scripting. Even furthermore, much of what's available on the WWW can be proxied through w/ Gem proxies you can set up yourself available as resource via various capsules on here. If you gotta delete every browser and denounce ever going on another hypertext telemetric mess ever again, there are ways to accomplish this at whatever pace you need. · 11 months ago
The small web is deeper than it looks. Give it a try! You can still get your news here so you're not missing as much as you might think. · 11 months ago
