(Full of spoilers)
tl;dr: 7.8/10.
Note: I've already read the book, currently at Children of Dune.
Today i finally watched the Dune: Part 2 which is not an actual sequel per se, Just covering the latter half of the book.
Now i havent watched the first part but i will probably soon watch it and update the review.
Movie picks up at a siege at a spice-harvester which is a scene that is not in the book and it clearly tries to show a bond beetween Chani and Paul.
Cutting out scenes or adding scenes to substitute hard to film or Un-film-worthy scenes is a common practice in the movie which is a criticism that first movie also endured but in the second movie it is taken to a larger scale and would be my main criticism.
Other than that movie is really loyal to source material.
While subsituting many scenes which take a more direct approach of trying to potray the main messages author Frank Herbert put, it is still trying to potray the messages author intended which many book adaptation movies i think fail in this particular regard.
One example of substitution or downright removal of scenes from the book was the interaction scenes beetween Feyd-Rautha and Baron Vlamidir Harkonnen.
Most of the aforementioned scenes probably have the most disgusting elements out of any scenes in the book(In a book already filled with downright disgusting elements) so it is understandable that they did not want to take this path.
However removing these scenes entirely really destroys the meaning about the complex and *entrika* or plans inside of plans side of the complex political landscape of the Dune Universe to such a degree the that fight scene during birthday celebrations beetween Atreides fighter and Feyd-Rautha basically looses its meaning.
A substitution of scenes that i really enjoyed that Bene Gesserit members examining Feyd-Rautha and sending Lady Fenring to get herself pregnant in order to confirm viability of Feyd-Rautha as Kwisatz Haderach candidate.
While not in original book this scene greatly explains Bene Gesserit works due to explanation of organazations such as Bene Gesserit are mostly explained in scenes or in-line references and those small section of in universe book references that could not be translated well into a movie.
An another complain of mine is pacing which i think anlot of modern movies and shows struggle about. Movie felt too fast some scenes especially battle of arrakeen felt too fast and was not detailed enough in my opinion to show the true weight of the situtation.
For the good sides? Movie was a visual spectacle especially the beginning, Sandworm scenes, Geidi Prime Scenes and The Battle of Arrakeen.
I watched the movie at an IMAX which i say is the correct way to watch the movie.
The three way movie screen really enchances the movie.
Sandworms scenes were stunning potrayed the creatures well.
The movie was full of emotion. Denis did a really good job at potralasing emotion.
He also really managed to give Chani a more fleshed put personality which books fail to produce. I believe movie also potrayrd Fremen really well. The scene where paul announces mesiahness really captured the essence of fremen religious ideas well(Which are planted by Bene Gesserit). The Fremen travel scenes were pretty good too.
The details to enviroment were simply astounding. The inscriptions on the walls, geometry everything enchanged the movie. Amount of details Denis put to movie is astounding and it will probably make Frank Herbert proud.
Overall i gave this movie a 7.8/10. I cut off points from the amount of scene deeation and omitting certain compexities mostly.
