I'd like to tinker around with DIY quantum experiments. Ideal single-photon-sources do not exist yet, but are there any cheap approximate ones? I saw that there are diodes that can detect single photons and beam splitters shouldn't be too hard to come by, but I don't know what to do about the source.

I remember reading something about an experiment (was it Young?) where single photons were achieved by some set-up that made it so improbable that a photon would get through that only one or two per day made it. I suppose the practiality would depend on wavelength. · 2 years ago
Will put it on my list then :) My experiment wouldn't involve anything crazy (nature performs it all the time) but I guess the thing about unintended consequences is they are not intended so we'll see! · 2 years ago
b-movie: best wiki it lest i plot-spoil it! involves experiments and unintend consequences. i think that you propose an interesting diy project. Cheers digbat. · 2 years ago
@digibat_camping No I haven't! Should I? · 2 years ago
i take it that you have watched "Frankenstein Unbound" :-) · 2 years ago
