I recently got into tracking music with MilkyTracker. Just today I finished transferring a version of Yann Tiersenâs Comptine d'un autre Ă©tĂ© into tracker format. I wish I could share it with you, but Iâm afraid that copyright makes this impossible.
Iâm not yet at a point where writing music this way is more efficient than using my traditional LMMS-sequencer based workflow, but the part that interests me is that tracking comes with so many limitations which force me to focus more on the composition itself rather than choosing the right configuration for my instruments.
For instance, I cannot use virtual instruments in a tracker, I can only define samples. Because I donât have a sample collection (Usually I only use virtual instruments!), this pretty much limits me to the sounds generated by the tracker itself, Square, Triangle, Sine, Sawtooth, and Noise.
Of course this might decrease the âsound qualityâ of the resulting piece of audio, but the âqualityâ of the musicâââas far as one might venture to imply such a thing existsâââstays the same.
I hope to use trackers more in the future, and to expand my horizons this way.
