I found out that EasyRPG Player is a thing, so I went on a bit of an RPG Maker binge. Starting with a classic...

EasyRPG Player

Ib

https://vgperson.com/games/ib.htm

What is this game?

A freeware horror adventure game made in RPG Maker 2000. (The "horror" aspect is very mild.)

A young girl named Ib visits an art gallery with her parents.
While observing the many exhibits, she suddenly realizes she is alone.
And in her search for others, she finds things awry in the gallery...

Originally released in 2012, and received a remake in 2022. I am playing the original just because it's free.

Did I enjoy playing it?

Yes. I like how the game is very aware of the game engine's limits and does not push itself to be the scariest thing in the world (Yume Nikki might have been able to pull that off due to its total surrealness, and OMORI is... OMORI...). Ib does put you in a lonely and suspenseful situation, but pretty quickly it turns into a more cutesy exploration game with some light puzzle elements. The game was short (only 2.5 hours) and had enough weirdness to keep me engaged, plus the art gallery setting is inherently pretty interesting, though the story overall is pretty forgettable. *7/10*, worth checking out since it's free, consider it a nice little treat!

Playing it on Linux, or low-spec hardware?

EasyRPG Player, which I mentioned above, is a free & open-source recreation of RPG Maker.

Play RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games on GNU/Linux, OS X, Windows, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, mobile devices and more with EasyRPG Player!

Perfectly fits this blog, doesn't it? I went ahead and packaged Ib for Arch Linux here:

The game is freeware, the game engine is (now) open source, so why not?

Everything worked fairly smoothly (except for one optional cutscene which did not play because EasyRPG doesn't support video playback yet). EasyRPG also supports an extra feature: fast-forwarding by pressing F or G. This was helpful when I went on to get different endings.
