AER: Memories of Old

What is this game?

A short Zelda-like game released in 2017, except you can fly rather than walk, and there's no combat.

Transform into a bird and fly to explore and experience a vibrant world of floating islands in the sky. Venture down into lost ancient ruins where each step leads you closer to the end of the world.

Did I enjoy playing it?

Meh. There are some things to like here, such as the flight mechanics being kinda fun (though basic), and the low-poly but vibrant artstyle. It's also neat that the game respects your intelligence: the main plot is a bit cryptic and relies on environmental storytelling, and progression is done via hints and compass directions rather than just adding waypoints to the current objective. That's great, but the core gameplay is just boring. You fly between floating islands, but the islands themselves just lead to a loading zone which contains a Zelda-like shrine: you cannot fly indoors, and there are no enemies to fight, so 70% of the game is just mediocre puzzle sections. The writing takes itself too seriously, especially the Russian translation which emulates old and religious literature (except with typos and misspellings). *6/10*, it's short and novel in some ways, so I don't regret playing it, but there are better games.

Playing it on Linux, or low-spec hardware?

It's a slightly newer 3D game but the low-poly aesthetic makes it easy to run, and I did not notice any issues with the Linux port.
