Arca Noae and ArcaOS - News

5.1

28/08/2023

The upgrade on my trusty ThnikPad T61 test machine went without a hitch.

So it's finally here! The long awaited ArcaOS 5.1 has been announced by the Arca Noae team. For all of us waiting for this moment, every recent announcement on the Arca blog meant the heart stopped, skipped a beat and then sank as it was "just" another driver announcement. When I woke up this morning and took a casual glance at my email on my phone, there it was, FINALLY, titled "ArcaOS 5.1.0 now available". No, my eye's did not deceive me. Upon opening the email, I read the partial text from the blog post and then clicked on the customary link ... then nothing. The Arca website was down. This has been the intermittent picture throughout the day.

I was able to read the full text mid morning using w3m in terminal. Yes, you read correctly, w3m the text based web browser was the only way to access the site, as this would not render any heavy, slow graphics. The blog told me that there had been some early teething problems which had now been corrected.

This all feels very familiar, harking back to the very first launch and excitement of ArcaOS 5.0 and heavy traffic on the website. I know Lewis and colleagues will have done everything in their power to test and re-test for a smooth launch. I feel the inaccessibility of the website adds to the suspense and excitement. With some patience I have been able to access my account on the Arca website and upgrade seamlessly using the usual form and payment. I'm sure this process will be similar for new licences. Following successful payment, the system removes the existing ArcaOS 5.0 version and replaces this with the new 5.1 version. It then builds this automatically for you and will email you in the usual way to inform you the download is ready.

I am currently in the process of downloading the 5.1 ISO on my ArcaOS 5.0.8 build using Dooble and am at about 1GB of the 1.3GB sized download.

I will report back following a hopefully successful installation.

Thank you to the Arca team for continuing to develop and secure the future of OS/2.

So we are getting very close now to the ArcaOS 5.1 major update release.

There has been frustrations at delays, teasing and great anticipation. The recent post finally released the cost for 5.1 and in particular the update cost for current licence holders with and without a maintenance subscription. Prices start at $59 if you have an active maintenance subscription.
