I really hate computers engaging in pretend conversations.
Hey, you left this.
Okay.
Do you still want it?
No.
Are you sure?
Yes, leave it.
Okay, before you go...would you like to sign up for this newsletter?
No.
Can I go now?
I don't want a conversation, I want actions. I don't want to ask to save, I just want to save. When I say 'exit', and I have 3 hours of work open, I want the program to instantly shoot itself in the face so its body can be reconstituted into free memory. Sure I might lose important work, but I've learnt to save once in a while with this workflow. It's not hard.
These simple extra steps, demanding you stop doing things, read what the computer wants to tell you, and select 'your response' (whether or not you actually want to say any of the given responses), may not take much time, but they fundamentally change the nature of the relationship. The computer stops being a tool, and becomes an interrogator.
