In the Crystal Sphere Techniques[1] system, an elemental is a non-reactive aspect of the world, the “nouns” of magic. Elementals run the gamut of dirt, stone, and glass, but also include more esoteric concepts such as identity or distance.

These are distinct from reactionals[2], which are the reactions between elementals.
In the beginning, elementals (and reactionals) were viewed as simple concepts: earth, water, and plant. However, as magic grew more precise and the understanding of how each one had different characteristics, the individual spheres where viewed as separate: soil verses dirt, clay verses sand, etc. These classifications resulted in different magical systems[3] to help explain the increasing understanding that some people focused on all earth magic while others were more specialized with clay or glass or even amethyst or diamond.
