Linux Phone News - August 18, 2023

Hello again! It has been a minute since I've been able to do another roundup on here due to some things going on in my personal life (planning a move out to a new piece of property we just picked up!), but finally, I can get things going on here again, planning on a weekly basis, to keep everyone more informed on the latest happenings in the world of Linux on mobile.

Quite a few updates to pass along since the last roundup, so let's get started!

Let's see what some of these new updates in this release consist of:

StarLite - a new Linux Tablet by Star Labs Revealed

It looks like we're about to see another entry into the world of mobile Linux hardware. Coming from the well-known company Star Labs, who also create lines of Linux-powered laptops, the StarLite will be an exciting new option for people considering a Linux tablet.

Let's take a look at some of the hardware specs:

The StarLite also features a nice convertible keyboard case, with a backlit keyboard and layouts available for US and UK English, French, German, Nordic, and Spanish.

You can also configure it the way you like before shipment, including choosing which GNU/Linux distribution you would like it to arrive with. The options currently include Ubuntu LTS, elementaryOS, Linux Mint, Manjaro, MX Linux, and Zorin OS. If you love any of these distros, you can have it shipped right to you with the distro of your choice pre-installed and ready to use.

This new tablet from StarLabs is looking to be quite interesting, and I will certainly be trying to get my hands on one for testing and review down the line. If you're interested in it, you can read all about it at this link:

Mobian Releases Bookworm, First Stable Release!

It is no big secret to anyone that my favorite Linux distro has always been Debian, and in turn, my favorite mobile distro is Mobian! I have kept Mobian around installed on my PinePhone for ages, and I am happy to say I also just flashed this newest Mobian release, based on Debian 12 Bookworm, to my PinePhone for daily usage.

This is a special release for Mobian, because it is the first they are considering truly stable enough for mobile devices, and Debian 12 becomes the base for the first stable Mobian release.

With this release, we see some of the following highlights:

If you love Debian and have never given Mobian a shot, I highly recommend it! You can read even more about this update at the Mobian blog, and you can download the images for installation on your devices at this link:

If you have one of these devices, check for updates! This is the first round of support for the Fairphone 3, the Vollaphone X23, and the F(x)tec Pro 1 X, so if you have been wanting to use Ubuntu Touch on these devices, the time is now to make the switch!

Here are a few of the updates and new features found in this release:

There were also a bunch of bugfixes and improvements. Here are a few:

These are just a few of the new features and fixes. To read a more through deep-dive into what's new, please check out the release notes from UBports!

For PinePhone and PinePhone Pro users, please note that these devices are updated independently of Halium-based devices, so you won't see an update labeled OTA-2 on these devices for the stable channel.

New Updates on PineTab 2 and PineTab-V Progress

We just saw a new update from Pine64 about the PineTab devices in the latest August Community Update. Here are the highlights in regards to PineTab2 and PineTab-V progress:

The new PineTab devices were just dropped a few months ago, and the community has been working hard to bring software releases and more to support them. In the future, I aim to be able to pick up a PineTab2 for myself to do some testing and building on. Expect articles and/or videos when I can make this happen!

If you want to learn more about the latest in the world of Pine64, I encourage you to check out the newest August Community Update.
