The ancient Greeks already used comfrey against bleedings and bronchitis. The Romans followed their example and also used it against broken bones and such. Hildegard von Bingen and Paracelsus named the plant 'consolida', which comes from 'consolidare'. This was because of that same wound healing and bone remodelling effect. According to the Doctrine of signatures the plant would also help against any skin disorders and the like. It would help against wounds, bruises, sprains, bruises and ulcers. In the old days, broken bones were treated by using a compress of comfrey. Culpeper even said something very curious, which we should probably not believe. He said that comfrey would even be able to reassemble cooked meat that was cut to pieces. Furhtermore, he said that comfrey would help against haemorrhoids and this seems to be actually true.
Nowadays, comfrey is still a known plant to help against bruises and the like. It can be used against wounds, fissures, ulcers, acne, furuncles, phlebitis, ulcus cruris, stomatitis, gingivitis, glositis, pharyngitis and itchiness. Furthermore, it can be used against broken bones, bruises, dislocations, muscle strains, sports injuries and sprains. All these effects are when the plant is used externally. Comfrey is a good plant for salves.
