I played more Netrunner with Barney yesterday although I donât fully remember everything that happen because I was a liâl sleep deprived before and didnât sleep much after either but most of the games were fun and anyone-could-win.
I lost most of the games to the point that he started doubting that I was playing seriously so I had to explain that while my plan perhaps wasnât very good, I did have one and that to the âwhy didnât you justâŠ?â, well, at that point I only had one credit đđ»ââïž The biggest mistakes in that game, I made five turns earlier.
I had âWhole Lotta Nothingâ, which is an event-driven Kit deck. I removed the Yogsucker package and replaced it with three Legworks, but keeping the Test Run Scavenge Femme Fatale package. I lost two or three games but managed to get one win via (of course) Indexing.
On the corp side the games were a liâl more fun given Barneyâs creative and fun runner rigs. I was representing Harmony Medtech with three Global Food Initiatives (a key card), two Future Perfects and one Utopia Fragment. My trap package was the same (Junebugs, Snares and Overwriters) but I had changed out the icies and the econ package; replacing the giraffes with Shipments from SanSan, and I also have Green Level Clearances rather than Restructures. What a card! You only net a single CE (itâs a double so you pay three CE for four) but the tempo and timing of that money can be so clutch. Although maybe Iâm kidding myself and itâs better to just not get so far up against the wall that Iâm wishinâ and hopinâ for a shipment? After all, I didnât get any wins.
On the ice side, I put in Chums and TL;DR mostly for how fun they are. I put two TL;DR in front of a Neural Katana. Fun fun fun â„ïž I also swapped the Quandaries for Snowflakes since I was already so codegate heavy but that was a mistake since that made me fold completely to fracters.
Another fun thing that happened was that I fasttracked a Utopia Fragment and it turnout that it was on top of R&D so if I had just consulted I wouldâve gotten it to HQ and I coulda saved myself the Fast Track! I think itâs a mark of a good game when the mechanics themselves, rather than the flavor, are fun or lead to laughs.
Of course we also dedicated some time to our two ongoing unfinished conversations:
The big one is: does the runner ID card (and heap and stack) belong down in the resource row or up in the hardware row like God intended? This is something that drives me so crazy. I wash my hands to keep away from Satan. At least weâre in agreement that the hardware row is between the resource row and the program row, unlike Jinteki.net.
And then the other, less important but still unsettled disagreement is about NSG, an organization that he has more or less accepted but I still have qualms, coming from some sorta foss/warez purity perspective where Iâm salty that they donât upload full-rez/full-bleed card faces, instead relying on their own for-profit-printing and some sorta have-the-cake-and-eat-it-too idea of what it means to be a fan driven game company trying to convey abandonware bona fides while also keeping the stewardship reigns tighter than a tarball cathedral.
I dunno. Maybe WotC/Talsorianâs third attempt at some sorta Netrunner 2077 (made impossible by NSG squatting the game) woulda sucked, heaven knows theyâve made some shortlived, less-than-stellar card games since nothing else they make can come close to the 800-pound Magic gorilla, wheras NSG has kept the game alive & well & supported. And I ask myself âIâm normally so damn punk and in favor of squatting and lifting and hitching and hijacking so why not this time?â and itâs because while they (figuratively speaking) disassembled the source code, they didnât release it. MNeMiCâs cards are part of what made me interested in Netrunner again (and NSGs name change was also a good thing). Itâs like how the fact that someone else could compile and install Dreamwidth makes LiveJournal look less bad. MNeMiCâs cards often have pirated art, the whole set a complete wild pirate job, but then the end result is fully made available to you for your own print runs.
I havenât gotten onboard with PICO-8 or Cohost: I just donât get it. I just donât understand this âindieâ twilight zone of suck between FOSS and megacorp. Maybe thereâs a whiny entitled hole in my head where appriciative admiration for indies and scrappy entrepeneurs and startups was supposed to go, and I accidentally filled that hole with public libraries and git repos.
In Barneyâs defense, he didnât know that they donât provide full-bleed, full-rez (to the point that fans are trying to recreate printable cards with ML upscalers and border generators). To his defense and to NSGâs undefense, because the fact that theyâre not clear about what aspects of their project are proprietary is part of the problem here. Itâs less fan-owned and more owned by one group of fans.
Iâm super cool with them wanting to have their own card backs, CoC, and organized play (and banlists). As free as Debian is, if some scammers would start falsely saying âwe speak for official Debianâ, heada would rightly roll. I donât want NSG to loosen the reigns to the extent that people could falsely say âwe speak for official Null Signal Gamesâ when they arenât. On the flipside, they have been interpreted by many as if they were âspeaking for official Netrunnerâ and while they make some efforts to disclaim that, theyâve also put themselves in a position where that impression keeps happening again and again.
FFG: âLalala just another day making Netrunner cardsâ
WotC ior Talsorian: âNot so fast! Because you can suddenly no longer have the license at that price!â
NSG: âlol we donât need no stinking licenseâ
If what NSG is doing were completely untangled legally, FFG couldâve just kept going. Ergo itâs a hijack. Which I woulda been cool with (just what part of âbe gay do crimesâ donât I understand?) if that then wouldâve been an âitâs free now! We stole it and made it free!â but they then only made it half of the way freeâŠ!? The school of the âSteal from the rich, give to the hey look over there! [Sneaks away]ââŠ?
Thatâs also why I feel like the MNeMiC cards can be the beginning of a redemption arc for the fan-run era of Netrunner. Add them to netrunnerdb.
I had mixed feelings about Gemini at first but I like it more and more and more.
Itâs just simple and good.
GQP invented that dems wanna ban gas stoves (even though the new regulations still would allow 97% of installed stoves) and are now spending so much time and effort shadowboxing against that fiction.
Thing is, I wish they had banned gas stoves for real. Although burning methane is way less bad than letting it leak out into the atmosphere, so itâs not a clear-cut decision. (Fracking it out of the ground, or producing it, is for sure bad.) Whatever road we head down I feel like saving the planet should be more important than the art of cooking for the simple reason that being able to cook at all requires a planet to be on. Enjoy the tastiest burgers on the cinder.

Internet age is (going to be) bad, and good.
I donât know about that. All I know it that I hate being online. I hate how it feels. Like ersatz living.
One of the many ways Iâve ruined Netrunner is that even though my Replicating Perfection deck is undefeated, Iâve built a new corp deck with a much worse identity (Harmony Medtech) that keeps losing and isnât very fun to play again since itâs so bad and has way too little ice and way too many Hedge Funds and Celebrity Gifts.
But today I managed to get in a win against Halo with it. He went 1â1 with Maxx against it. After bouncing off a Himitsu-Baku, he rebirthed into Quetzal, only to learn that behind every great Himitsu-Baku there is⊠another Himitsu-Baku. I was five points behind but after scoring a Mushin-no-Shinâed Future Perfect I could Fast Track into a winning Global Food Initiative.
(The preceding game I got steamrolled. Indexing is a helluva drug.)
On the runner side, I played Kit âHoly Shitâ Peddler vs New Angeles Sol and won two, sandwiching one early scoop after bouncing off an R&D glacier after keeping a hand with two Notoriety and no breakers. So a 3â2 record overall. Fun fun fun.â„ïž
Iâve been trying out a sucker/Yog.0 rig and itâs not great. MU is too tight. But I also put in the Scavenge/âTest Run/âFemme Fatale combo and Halo pointed out that Scavenge could be used to move the âfliesâ (our pet name for Cyber Cypher).
My fave card in my green âWhole Lotta Nothingâ Kit deck has always been Inti, and this was a match where it really shone. R&D, HQ, and one remote were all double iced (R&D was triple iced) but the inner icies were Resistors and Wraparounds. GGâ„ïžâ„ïžâ„ïž

Tomb of Annihilation was exactly 100 sessions. The various campaigns before it (Lost Mine was 12, The Lost City was 24, then Princes Iâm not sure but maybe six or so, and I donât know about our Glitchworld homebrew either, maybe that was also 24 ish? And something similar for CoS? Then for the Corsair Council campaign, I dunno... over a dozen maybe? Or if you count the alternate ruleset sessions (we ran side stories using Microscope, DitV, and Cthulhu Dark) then probably around 20 total. And then ToA started.) So roughly 500 total is my super rough guess?! đ€·đ»ââïž I could maybe try to sift through our old calendar files for a closer estimate.
Some of yâall know this but we restarted the campaign numbering when we went back to the rule that new characters start at level one. HTML5 tries to accomplish commendable goals and one could use it to create a rather minimal web pages. How? Go back to roots: write it in a way it can be understood by a human being, properly mark the content within it, and keep the hierarchy shallow.
Yes, thatâs great. Thatâs the way to think.
However, adding one more layer of syntax on top wonât solve the issue at all. Believe it or not, it will only make it worse.
I disagree here. Once youâve handwritten enough HTML, and believe me, I have for a lifetime in my day, having a liâl helper to cross those tâs and dot those iâs is pretty dang welcome.
Back in the nineties, after having written less than slash p greater than for the thousandth time, and with Wardâs wiki still being a few years out in the future, I even used a filter to convert RTF to HTML. Thatâs how sick I was of open angle bracket slash i close angle bracket. (Only for the body part of my own handwritten templates. I was never onboard with the gross muck of Dreamweaver and its ilk, never used that, always hated that. Always look at the HTML. A computer should not make managerial decisions.)
In the end I can get behind hating HTML. Use gemtext. Gemtext is great. Gemtext is robust. Gemtext is truth. And I generate mine from Markdown.
I disagree with this:
I use Markdown as a tool to help me write HTML. I use it as a way to not have to write every <p> and every <br/>. I use it along keyboard shortcuts and other preprocessors and filters. Itâs a big beautiful shortcut.
It really shines as a syntax to describe comments, short plain-text documents or messages like e-mails
Thatâs when it is at its weakest because of the em/i/cite issue. Itâs good for blog posts when I can freely mix in HTML. I donât use a lot of extensions. I donât even use the three backticks fence, I use four spaces. I prefer reference links. I use a pretty old-school, traditional Markdown. I donât see it as a format. I see it as a way to generate HTML.
I sent a patch today to a project that ran my code through a TypeScript linter. I agreed with some of the linebreak and indentation choices (+ I had also majorly borked up something unrelated to indentation but that the linter caught, so thatâs good) but I donât like that it added unnecessary parens. It wanted to turn
foo && bar || baz
to
(foo && bar) || baz
Promoters of infix languages that then canât deal with infixâ own orders of operations. Iâm so spoiled over in Prefix Sexp Land that everytime I take a visit to Infix City I get clobbered by the gratuitious parens their linters wanna slather all over my elegant liâl typewriter gothic.
If something in the deli aisle makes you cry, of course Iâll put my arms around you and walk you outside. Why would I mind?
But I then never ever again wanna hear someone promote infix over prefix and say that infix is better or more intuitive or whatever. That right has been permanently wavered by the application of these grubby linters.
Added ewhen, eor and eand to brev. They are anaphoric versions of when, or and and that treats empty things as falsy. Not always what you want but sometimes pretty dang nice. We already had eif and econd.
(eand -1 (add1 it)) ;; #f since it treats zero as falsy (eor 0 (add1 it)) ;; 1
From brev-separate version 1.96.
That said, this is an easy way that works đ€·đ»ââïž sometimes keep it simple keeps it simple

A house rule we donât use anymore since the players always hated it so it was my Christmas present to them one time to remove it and I ask them about it every now and then and theyâre like âyes! Itâs great that you removed it!!â but I loved it, it was this:
If they asked for silver but you wanna pay with gold, each gold coin is worth eight silver.
If they asked for gold but you wanna pay with silver, twelve silver is worth one gold.
This made both coin types more valuable since having the right type for the right situation would be a more efficient way to pay. It also really fit the flavor of the different currencies in use in the region, that gold really is another kind of money and not just a shiny tenner.
If the book or module said a hemp rope costs 1 gp, Iâd have them ask for 10 silver. So on that end the 1:10 ratio still existed. Some OSR books in the wake of Delta and LotFP ask would say â1 spâ there; that would mean 10 silver in our game world, basing our prices and economy roughly on the Cairo edition of The Thousand and One Nights, and 2eâs â50 coins is one poundâ rule. A âsilver standardâ in the sense that people usually deal with silver and gold is something really special, but not in the sense of slashing all values by ten.

Turns out the patch itself, the code, is what had the 8-bit char because the code touched printing of some glyphs.đ€Šđ»ââïž

Number one is that I canât have the video app open at the same time as the PDF app. So they canât see me nor can I see them. But today I tried really hard to switch back to the video app as often as I could! Since my memory is /dev/null, that meant making notes of some of the baboonsâ stats. (They were fighting large baboons.)
Number two is something that the DMG tells you to do (p247) but which is usually too much of a chore to do. Itâs to give each monster a trait, like âthe one with a helmetâ, âthe one with a scarâ and so on. Thatâs difficulter than it sounds for pretty small rewards (weâve been getting by just fine for ten years with just âthe one thatâs fighting Nannaâ, âthe one over by Nechtaâ and so on) but those rewards, though small, are non-zero and since I wanted to give 110% today, I tried it. Itâs difficult but the difficulty is up front and then the payoff of doing that lasts throughout the entire fight.
Fun fun fun.â„ïž
Also the session today was #blorb at its finest and most distilled:
Iâve got the rooms, Iâve got the features, Iâve got the monsters, Iâve got the traps, what do you do? And what ensues are totally fair shenigans like âOK weâre stuck down here and we donât have a rope but if we polymorph the elf rogue into a giant hornet (other âgiant fliersâ are too big to fit the passage) she can carry the gnome and they can go to the Horus Head barbershop and buy ropes.â Two explorations turns later: âWhoops we canât unpolymorph ourselves and the bard is 200 feet under the ground and donât know whether weâve landed and we didnât come up with a plan. So weâre hiding on the ground until the polymorph runs out.â One hour later: âWhoops we have no money and there are only three ropes for sale here. Letâs head down to Gosterwick, maybe we can sell this figurine down there.â Two hours later: âWhoops we wore out our shoes and we are getting attacked by boars!â And so on. Love it.

Hey there are new Kimi Ni Todoke* volumes coming in English! âKimi Ni Todoke Soulmateâ is the subtitle for the new numbers (and they start over with a new numbering).
