So, it has been some time since "the first AI software engineer" named "Devin" was released. Now like chatgpt, gpt 4, llama, and so on, people were freaking out, "I am going to lose my job to Devin!", "We hate Devin", "Another AI is going to take our jobs". Now, since i dont have a job(yet) i dont feel the stress that software engineers face but lets look at it from another point of view and some arguments as to why i dont think AI will take many software engineers' jobs.
++++++++
First, I was a little surprised by Devin, but still a little skeptical, so I dug a little deeper and first looked at the timestamps in the announcement video. (funny thing to point out is that in the introduction Scott Wu's job is "Human Software Engineer") but I couldn't find the timestamps, so I looked at the other videos. Now from what I could see, it isn't fast and takes far too long for simple issues. With that said, I could see it being used in the future as it slowly progresses and gets better and better. This is the same argument I've seen a couple of other people use. Now I think that it is overhyped, but it is an amazing achievement in artificial intelligence and software development for the future. Now, for the general "AI will take our jobs as programmers" argument, simply said, No.
++++++++
Programmers will be there to secure, protect, and manage the AI, but not take their jobs. There is a higher chance of AI taking jobs such as accountants, and banking because computers are good with numbers, etc and I think only after a certain amount of time, probably not too long. AI will start to take over smaller jobs with not a big impact, I think. Programmers won't cease to exist until ai can solve problems faster and more efficiently than human software engineers can, and still it will need programmers to continue on working.
