                           T.I.M. - The Icon Maker
                                 Version 1.0

Lets start off with how to handle the download:

1: Download as a single XMODEM file, do NOT unpack on the fly.
  2: Format or Erase a 3 1/2" Disk. Name it T.I.M.
3: Use BLU V2.2x to unpack to the 3 1/2" Disk.
4: Pop the disk out of the drive BEFORE you 'Q'uit BLU.
5: Write protect the disk for now.
6: Go to the Finder's Special Menu - Preferences.
7: Turn off 'Save Finder Info Onto Disk',thats the best way to run
anyhow.
8: Now with the Finder up and a clear blue desktop insert the Disk.

If you followed the above you will have three Grasshopper (TM) Icons on
screen.

Now for a quick run thru and your first icon.

1: Double click on 'Grasshopper Software.V1.0
  2: Double click on T.I.M.
3: Press Return - There is a sample ESP.0 on the disk.
4: Now you will see the sample $C1 Page for a few seconds.
5: Since this Icon is for a modem program type in the name of your
program then press return.
6: Now type in the file type in HEX.
       B3 for a PROdos 16 SYStem file
FF for a PROdos 8 SYStem file
FC for an Applesoft BASic file
Just type in the two HEX symbols, do NOT press return.
P.S. A list of File Type HEX codes follows later on.
7: This icon is 64 pixels wide, type 64 Return.
8: This icon is 46 pixels high, type 46 Return.
9: Now the program gos to work, and complains about it!
10: I did a mask so just press 'Y',do NOT press return.
11: Press any key except 'esc'.
12: Type in an Icon Name or Press Return for 'Test.Icon'.
13: When the program stops complaining press Return.
14: Now just press 'N' to return to the Finder.

OK, You just made your first Icon, now put it in a folder named 'ICONS' on
the Disk with your modem program on it, then pull it out from the finder
and reinsert. Then turn on 'Save Finder Info To Disk, pull the icon off to
the desk top, close the folder, position the Icon in the center of the
desktop, and pull the Disk into the Trash (or Toilet), now turn off 'Save
Finder Info'.
Fron now on when you insert this disk the icon will pop up on the desktop
ready to double click and run.

                            MASKS: PROS and CONS
The finder xor's the icon with the mask when you select it. This can give
you some interesting effects if you make a custom mask. Check out the three
screens for some ideas on how to make a mask. 'All About Masks' is a
picture worth a thousand words when it comes to:
  A: Masks
  B: Masks selected
  C: Masks on the desktop
D: Masks selected on the desktop.

Whether you make a mask or not depends on the outline you use for your
Icon, check out MEAN18, and FREE.TERM for Icons that need a mask. Most
Icons will look just fine with the mask that is made automatically if you
press 'N' in answer to 'Did you make a mask?'.

                              USING THE PROGRAM
If I Wanted to write a manuel I could, but then I would want to make this
Shareware, so instead all the instructions are on the the three screens for
each paint program I am aware of at this time, Sorry I havn't got
PaintWorks Gold yet!, so I don't know if their palettes are any differant.

Therefore follow the downloading instructions to the letter then do the
pratice Icon. Then run your paint program and load the three screens and
print them if possible. This is the best way I can think of to learn 'How
To'.
One point about palettes and dithering, unless you have 816/Paint stick to
the 320 mode, only 816/Paint shows the Icons correctly in 640 mode.
Deluxepaint II, 640 mode is only four colors and does not support
dithering, therefore it is a useless piece of garbage. However the 320 mode
is GREAT.

If you havn't downloaded my CDA's 'CPR'- Cut Paste Restore, and the ESP
Screen Saver they are included in the file in a folder named 'DESK.ACCS, so
install them on your system disk. They are worth having and using if you
use paintworks, an AST Card or just like to play with graphics, like I do.

                              DISTRIBUTION POLICY
As far as I'm concerned, this program is so vertical in market that it
makes the Eiffel Tower look like a swizzle stick. There can't be more than
a handful of people in the entire universe that will need this program, but
if you're one of the handful and want to send me millions of dollars,
please feel free.

But this is what I ask:

If you use this program in a commercial venture, (to make money) then I
request that you send me a registration card, which includes the name of
the program or product you plan to bundle it with. Send it registered mail,
return receipt requested, your receipt is your license for distribution.

If you have no intention of using T.I.M. for commercial use, I still would
like to know who you are, how you got the program, and what version you've
got. It's like a message in a bottle. I want to find out just how far it
reaches.

Periodically, the latest version will be posted to GEnie, and you can
download it from there, at your own cost.

Also, if you want to make suggestions, comments or bug reports, great!

So, drop me a line. You can reach me in a number of ways:

I'll write your name and address down on the top of my desk. I can
guarantee that the name you give me won't show up on some 'Vacations in
Kamchatka' subscription list, 'cause I wouldn't know who to sell a
subscription list to! Besides, Kamchatka is cold this time of year.

Copy it, give it to your friends (or enemies), upload it to your favorite
BBS, whatever. Just keep the files together and this notice intact.
