Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate
Regarding the future, I have no hope. Where I was born and raised, all the reasons given to have hope turned out to be myths.
To regain hope, I'd need to believe a number of things...
...that human energy consumption could be met by energy production means that do not cause mass destruction. So far, this is unattainable. Despite decades of warnings and numerous advances in efficiency, consumption continues to rise. Meanwhile, revolutions in energy production always seem just beyond the horizon.
...that microplastics will be turn out to be a non-issue. We're still finding out how they affect biological processes, so we don't know what damage they might be doing. We do know that we can't get rid of them. They're already everywhere. Moreover, a top source of microplastics is clothing. In order to stop producing more microplastics, the entire species would have to give up nylon, polyester, and other polymer textiles.
...that the citizens and rulers of the USA will gracefully accept their inevitable loss of the top economic and political position in the world. Most of them are still in denial that it's going to happen, and as they catch on, many turn into jingoistic reactionaries. Some would rather destroy the world than let anyone else run it; thanks to a massive h-bomb stockpile, total destruction is entirely possible.
...that the People's Republic of China will do a better job as a superpower than other nations have done before. China is on track to become the leading nation of the world by multiple measures. If they do reach limitless economic and political power, will they wield it well? History shows that power tends to corrupt.
...that as multiple declining nations, notably the USA, fall apart, they won't sacrifice all the "lesser" people, such as disabled people I care about.
I could mention other topics, but these are more than enough. Given the information available to me, I see no reason to believe any (let alone all) of the above.
