2 โ€Ž[1] ืื“ื ื›ื™ ื™ืงืจื™ื‘ ืžื›ื IF A MAN OF YOU OFFER [AN OFFERING] โ€” This means, when he offers: Scripture is speaking here of free โ€” will offerings (cf. Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Section 2 4).

โ€Ž[2] ืื“ื โ€” Why is this term for โ€œmanโ€ employed here? Since ืื“ื also means Adam, its use suggests the following comparison: what was the characteristic of the first man (ืื“ื ื”ืจืืฉื•ืŸ)? He did not offer sacrifice of anything acquired by way of robbery, since everything was his! So you, too, shall not offer anything acquired by way of robbery (Leviticus Rabbah 2:7).

โ€Ž[3] ื”ื‘ื”ืžื” [OF] THE BEASTS โ€” One might think that wild beasts are also included! Scripture, however,โ€™ goes on to state, โ€œeven of cattle or of sheepโ€ (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Section 2 6).

โ€Ž[4] ืžืŸ ื”ื‘ื”ืžื” OF THE BEASTS โ€” but not all of them: the phrase, โ€œsome of the beastsโ€) is used in order to exclude male and female animals with which sexual sin has been committed (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Section 2 7).

โ€Ž[5] ืžืŸ ื”ื‘ืงืจ OF THE CATTLE โ€” This serves to exclude an animal which has been worshipped as a god (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Section 2 9).

โ€Ž[6] ืžืŸ ื”ืฆืืŸ OF THE SHEEP โ€” This serves to exclude an animal set aside for the purpose of being offered to an idol (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Section 2 11).

โ€Ž[7] ื•ืžืŸ ื”ืฆืืŸ AND OF THE SHEEP โ€” The ื• prefixed to the word is intended to exclude a goring ox that has killed a man. โ€” When Scripture again says lower down in the section, (v. 3) ืžืŸ ื”ื‘ืงืจ, โ€œof the cattleโ€, โ€” which word ืžืŸ it was unnecessary to use, (it would have sufficed to say: 'ืื ืขื•ืœื” ืงืจื‘ื ื• ื–ื›ืจ ื•ื›ื•) โ€” it is intentionally used to exclude a ื˜ืจืคื” (an animal afflicted with a fatal organic disease) (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Section 2 11).

โ€Ž[8] ืชืงืจื™ื‘ื• YE SHALL OFFER [YOUR OFFERING] โ€” The plural ืชืงืจื™ื‘ื• teaches us that two (or more) persons may bring a burnt offering as a free โ€” will gift in partnership (Sifra, Vayikra Dibbura d'Nedavah, Chapter 3 1).

โ€Ž[9] ืงืจื‘ื ื›ื YOUR OFFERING โ€” This teaches us) that it (the ืขื•ืœื”) may also be offered as a free-will gift of the community (not of individuals only). This was the burnt offering bearing the name of โ€œthe summer - fruit offeringโ€) of the altar which had to be supplied from the surplus of the levy upon the people (cf. Shevuot 12a, Shevuot 12b).
