8 [1] **MISHNAH:** A tree which gives a round shadow on the ground, if its crown is less than three hand-breadths from the ground one may carry under it. One may not put back the door of a shed, or the thorns in a breach, or a mat, unless they are higher than the ground.
[2] **HALAKHAH:** Only it should be no larger than two bet *se’ah*, or the walls ten [hand-breadths] high, nor the opening wider than ten [cubits], nor what was standing was opposite what was standing and what was breached opposite the breached.
[3] Paragraph. Rebbi Aḥa in the name of Rav: It is forbidden to (tear off) [trample on] roots of a vine on the Sabbath. There is no difference between the roots of a [barren] tree or the roots of cabbage. If they are three [hand-breadths] high. But if they are not three [hand-breadths] high they are like the ground.
[4] The Mishnah refers to the case that there are no hinges. But if there are hinges that is what was stated: “a hinged door, a hinged mat, hinged lattice gates, one may open and lock on the Sabbath, and it is not necessary to say on a holiday. If a mat was tied to and hanging from a pillar, one may open and lock on the Sabbath, and it is not necessary to say on a holiday.”
