9 [1] Scripture begins the list of punishments at the beginning of the section with the person who curses his father in the same manner that Scripture earlier starts with *Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father* (Lev. 19:3). Our verse mentions the father before the mother out of respect for the father. It is unlike *Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father*, for he is not put to death if he has not reached the age of *mitzvah* observance.
[2] FOR WHATSOEVER MAN THERE BE THAT CURSETH HIS FATHER OR HIS MOTHER SHALL SURELY BE PUT TO DEATH. The phrase *asher yekallel* (that curseth) is to be read as if written twice. Our verse is to be read as if written, “and whoever curses his mother.” *He hath cursed his father or his mother* is another way of saying he has committed a great abomination.
[3] HIS BLOOD SHALL BE UPON HIM. Compare, *his blood shall be upon his head* (Josh. 2:19). The blood of those who are stoned and strangled is upon them. I will now state a general rule concerning all executions. We cannot derive the manner of execution from Scripture. Hence we need the tradition of our fathers. Scripture similarly does not state at what age one is obligated to observe the commandments.
