1 ‎[1] IN MOUNT SINAI. There is no chronological order in the Torah. This section precedes, *And the Lord called* (Lev. 1:1) and all the sections that follow it, for the words recorded in our section were told to Moses on Mount Sinai. Moses now made the covenant recorded in the Torah portion *Now these are the ordinances* (Ex. 21:1). Moses inserted this portion at this point to place in proximity the conditions under which the Israelites could dwell in the land. He said that the land would spit out the Israelites if they violated the laws of prohibited sexual relations. He said a similar thing in the Torah portion *If ye walk in My statutes* (Lev. 26:3) with regard to the Sabbaths of the land. Moses first mentions the Sabbaths.
