I'm configuring a windows box so that i can use a hospital wifi. ..Yeah i gave up on trying to make it work with Linux, the portal seems to demand windows CRAP to allow me to make a connection. I don't have acces to apple either.. so i'm not sure about that.

I have not used windows for 10 years and HELL what a challenge to get used to the tile nonsense, but then the software that works so nice on linux is also behaving odd in the windows world. I'm not sure if I even want to be in this rabbit hole.

It just feels wrong on every level.

Just one request for any sysadmin who configures hospital WIFI.

Make 100% sure that Linux machines get easy acces as well.

While making notes I'm making the plan to create a step by step manual. Then post it here on gemini. Problem is that my time at the hospital is limited, and i'd rather not waste it. I'm getting to old for this... And people twice my age are being put through all this hellish crap.

I really wonder if they learned anyting, after all they were born right after WWII, yet they fail to take a stand against digital oppression. They should know better right? Why do people keep up with this conveniance crap? ... this also deserves it's own thread... · 2 months ago

BTW yesterday i also found that the revalidation home also has it's own wifi, so i'm soon going to have second option. (or yet another challenge..) · 2 months ago

I'll ask someone who has a phone to connect and i'll copy the URL from there.

It's creepy how Linux machines appear to be discriminated these days in this all-inclusive politically driven woke-world. And the woke appear to be blind for the discriminations they support. One rule, If you don't want to be discriminated then make sure that you are not discriminating. as those who are discriminated WILL make you aware of it, and unfurtunately that will feel discriminating, and it probably is.. But how else do you make people aware? Is it a bad thing to discriminate discriminators? And are you then a discriminator, or someone who raises awareness? Yeah both... · 2 months ago

@userfxnet I know this will sound weird, but no, i don't have a smartphone anymore. At home i have a 'land line' a phone thats plugged in to the router. I'm completely done with this forced digital everything, not against technology at all, but don't force me... Same with cash,, now they force us to pay digitally i just DONT, cash is a lawful currency, if they refuse to accept it then they break the law. o damn.. i'll make a new thread for this... :-) · 2 months ago

@maxheadroom -cont'd p2 DON'T! Bring up the page, but once it's up, check the address bar. Take the address of that access point, ue your laptop and connect to that public wifi with the laptop and yes it's not gonna work right off the bat, but THEN: OPEN A BROWSER. PLUG in the string for that access point. Authorize the connection. VOILA! HOPEFULLY, this is it. let me know. · 2 months ago

👽 userfxnet

OMG WTF @maxheadroom I GOT IT !! I KNOW HOW TO FIX YOUR PROBLEM. YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!!! ANDROIDS AND IpHONES -CAN- LOG IN FINE! RIGHT??? CAUSE THEY GET PROMPTED TO LOG IN VIA ACCESS PORTAL ON BROWSER!!!!!!!!!

OK. Check it, darque. This is what ya gotta do. Do you have a phone, right? You must, as it's necessary to be able to navigate around anywhere these days. Maybe a rooted phone? Whatever it may be you can log in with our phone right? Ok. When you enable wifi, and check for connections, then connect to the hositals wifi? It's going to prompt you to authorize it, yeah? · 2 months ago

@clseibold hehe everyone is being hypnotised by 'convenience' but there is no bigger headache... I'm glad i can opt-out of the AI stuff, but it would be more convenient if it had been opt-in.

There are people connected to the wifi with Apple and Android devices, i tried to connect with brave and with firefox but i couldn't get through the portal hoops. But i managed to trigger the firewall and everyone lost access... well at least it felt like i triggered it. As it happened right when i was trying. But the waste of time to get connected to a hospital wifi so that someone wo is sick can eventually access essential data... shocking.. · 2 months ago

👽 clseibold

Otherwise, yeah, @userfxnet is right. Usually the public wifi portal isn't limited to just Windows, it's just that whether your Linux system prompts you to go to the portal website or not depends highly on what Linux distro you're using (that's part of the inconsistent ecosystem of Linux, lol).

There could be cases where it's Internet Explorer only, but then that means it's an old router, lol. · 2 months ago

@maxheadroom Before you switch to W11, you should know that MS has integrated more AI stuff into the OS, but it can be disabled. It's their next Cortana, basically, except this time it's powered by ChatGPT and Bing's AI stuff. You might not want to upgrade because of that, which makes sense, but just thought you should be aware. · 2 months ago

@bavarianbarbarian imagine that people need to access private medical data on these crapworks. Medical dick n tit pics, tumor's, brain scans, and other stuff that insurance clowns like to collect. And insurance clowns are brutal enough to request these images, while it actual is data that is under medical secret. Please send us a screenshot to our insecure unencrypted email. You can trust us, we promise it is all very safe.

If you use a hotmail or gmail address ..meh, that's not our problem... BUT YOU MUST send us your pussy area if you want your insurance.

Why on earth people accept this crap i don't know. · 2 months ago

👽 maxheadroom

We all will be old very soon, and we will be forced to do everything digital. Not just we the tech-heads, but also the farmers, carpentes, cooks, everyone. We sould not accept this bullshit, i'm not accepting it, but right now i care more about the human in the hospital. I can't be maxheadroom when i really need to be, as i would most likely pull an a-hole over his desk and shake the crap out of him. Then get banned form entering the hospital etc. :-)

I can't do it, as one person needs me to be there. But i'm pissed.. · 2 months ago

👽 maxheadroom

the thing is, that when i'm at the hospital im there to visit someone trying to help with all the bureaucratic bullshit etc. And visitin hours are limited.. So i HATE to waste my time to connect to an f-ing wifi... I already gave them a maxheadroom covo on the topic. And the medical staff agrees with me. They also get pissed, but they also get bullshitted by the management a-holes. By venting a bit of the bullshit i kinda hope to inspire my fellow gemini dwellers to raise some hell. Aimed at the right people... The medical staff are not to blame, they work wonders. But it's not easy to get to the a-holes on top... · 2 months ago

@clseibold I'll upgrade to 11. After 10 years this eco system feels like being dropped off in the middle of a desert. But i'm also still not used to Linux. I couldn't figure out how to get connected... The portal stuff just keeps failing.

i'll also try @userfxnet 's hints. In a way it does make more sense then downloading half the internet to get the W11 upgrade lol... I agree that it probably not the hospitals fault, but seeing so many people struggle to get connected just pisses me off, and i do blame the hospital for not saying FU to the company that installed the crap.

@clseibold as a former unixsysadmin, i'd say IT in general is insecure by design. · 2 months ago

👽 userfxnet

Oh i think I know what's going on. Is it asking you to sign-in/register connection? If no pop-up shows up to help you connect to access point page, just go to their localhost address 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.1 it's one of those idr right now. If you go to the source of that access point login from your browser, you should still be able to see it, authorize the connection, and be allowed to use it. I don't think it has anything to do with the fact your computer is linux lol. It does that to every phone from any hospital, and even most fast food, retail stores, and other shops or office spaces. · 2 months ago

👽 clseibold

I suspect the hospital has to deal with the weird way to connect via the public wifi portal mainly because router/modem manufacturers actually suck so much. Like, every router is insecure and has awful software. So I don't know if we can blame the hospital too much, lol · 2 months ago

@maxheadroom Upgrading to Windows 11 is free, actually. I recommend upgrading to get a more KDE-like UI. However, you can right click all of the tiles and click remove (or wheatever it's called) and once you've removed all of them, the whole space where the tiles were will disappear/contract. · 2 months ago

👽 maxheadroom

@clseibold Is there still a way to get an 'old' menu based desktop on win 10? I'm not willing to pay for windows 11 ubgrades after experiencing all this. I rather donate this laptop to an elderly person who can live in a browser. I also need to try to acces medical DATA that i received on a CD.. (go figure) They hope that use some windows machine to copy confidential medical data from CD to a USB. ...and then i'm to blame if any of that data end up in places it shouldn't But they force people to jump though all these digital hoops. I should be able to access their secure server from an insecure windows machine in their dream scape... · · 2 months ago
