Great read. Doom ain't the only game to have benefitted from releasing the source code to open source license. Duke Nukem 3D's BUILD engine's source being released has done wonders to preserve the legacy of that game and all others that shot off from the engine's development like Blood.. or Redneck rampage.. lol.
Other great titles like Friday Night Funkin and NetHack have greatly benefitted from being open source specially in part to their longevity and replayability as games that can still be enjoyed long after they've had an initial spike of activity.
