Fumble Around Discussion

Fumble Around Home Page

Introductory Post

Hey BBS, I was inspired to write a gemini discovery service today, and figured I'd start a discussion thread on it here. Any and all feedback is welcome 🙏

(I know that at the moment the user is liable to get repeated pages; I seeded the dataset with about 40 pages that I know of, some obvious, like BBS itself, and others less so. Everyone is welcome to add any other pages they know of now or come across in the future; submission link is on the homepage.)

I love finding new places with such things. However does this offer anything over posting a link here in s/discoveries? We can also discuss such links here...

BBS is great for discussion but it's got quite a bit of friction to using it as well. You have to create an account, for starters, and then the post creation takes a bit of effort. This is just an input and bam, link submitted.

On the side of viewing content, having the page presented to you without introduction could be more compelling then navigating to it by choice, based on a title someone else came up with. Scrolling through s/discoveries none of the titles really caught my eye and made me want to click on them, but I'm sure there's _something_ in there I'd want to see. If it was presented directly then I get to see more variety.

that's neat

does it detect duplicates?

👻 mediocregopher [OP...] · May 01 at 17:28:

@gritty thanks! Yes it does detect duplicates.

There's some logic in the page picking to prefer pages which were submitted more recently (though with as few pages as there are right now it's not necessarily noticeable). This is not affected by a duplicate being submitted, so re-submitting a page doesn't reset its priority.

I like the idea in principle, but I'm not likely to fumble much because random content isn't that interesting. Personally, I'd rather see a list of 3-10 links randomly selected, with a 1024 character excerpt of the page, allowing me to click on whatever looked interesting. Loading whole pages that I'm not interested in seems a bit inefficient, and the original authors do not get interaction.

StumbleUpon for Gemini! Idk about anyone else here, but I’ve actually been thinking something like this has been needing to happen. Much in the same way Bubble fills the gap for sites like diff and Reddit, I think this is a great way to aggregate and explore new varieties of Gemini hosted content in a web ringesque inventive way. I had been meaning to employ something similar for Hashnix’s content portal but I feel this fills that gap perfectly plus I have a lot on my plate atm outside of pubnix biz . :P Will def be filling a submission to yr capsule, as well as hopefully being able to feature your own service as a link on my portal if I have your permission. Cheers!
