2024.05.07 Tue 18:44 Deceived by minimal productivity desk setup

I recently saw an LinkedIn post that goes like this "My minimal productivity desk setup for remote work" and then a picture with:

I was already in disbelieve but why do I saw this post in the first place? It's because one of my colleague commented on it. He said that for minimal setup this IS NOT ENOUGH and left advice:

I was reading all of this after work while sitting on the ground with laptop on my laps, which is my "setup". I have nothing against dedicated work space or high quality work tools. I just disagree that productivity has anything to do with desk setup. For sure it does not make you a better programmer. This is true for hardware and software you use.

It's true that both hardware and software can introduce friction slowing your progress. But my observation shows that this is the least of the concerns for most people. The true minimal productivity setup would include: no phone, no coffee breaks, no snacks, no music, no notifications, no task switching, no stress etc. You get the idea. With such mindset you can achieve more in 1 hour without any setup. Even the best gear will get you nowhere if you lack focus and discipline.

If you believe that better IDE, mechanical keyboard, more monitors, new programming language, library or framework will make you a better programmer then you already lost your way.

The lesson of True Strength means rejecting strength that is not your own. Meditate on this.
