14 November 2021 - Happy Tired This weekend was spent at a Scout camp. My heels throb and I can only manage a sort of shuffle when trying to walk. My face feels like it is sun burnt. I get frequent wafts of smoke smells. The eyes feel heavy. The soul is filled with joy, fulfilment and happiness regardless. There were some 42 people aged 6 to 17 and a core leader team of 8. November camps tend to be more about activities so we were in buildings. Yes, we should be in tents. Yes, tents offer an experience. Yes, tents are traditional. But tents involve a lot of effort and are simply not practicable with the younger ones for keeping warm. I do camp in December with the older ones so it does matter to me. When you hit a certain number, tents are the bane of the leaders' lives. The kids did lots of climbing, air rifle shooting, archery, inflatable gladiator pugel sticks thing, sledding and pedal go karts. Add to this some playing with fire and you have a great weekend. Having the whole group together on camp adds difficulties with aiming activities and challenges to satisfy all kids but it also gives me a chance to meet new beavers and cubs. It was nice to have some explorers on the camp who I first spoke to when they were beavers on the same camp albeit a fair few years before. Sleep was hard over the weekend for a few reasons. One disadvantage of the buildings is heat management. Generally it was roasting inside until about 4 am when the heating is off and suddenly I wake up from the cold. Add some late nights chattering or playing cards against humanity and I am falling asleep as I type. Filled with joy and heart filled thanks for those who send their kids and who volunteer to help give those kids hopefully happy memories and experiences. I am currently trying to catch up with the first day of the Kyushu Basho while also checking who won the T20 world cup. Sports galore for me to fall asleep to.
