19 May 2021 This evening is somethinf a bit different. I am at a gig. Yes a gig. Also typing this on my phone is harder than I thought. The room is full of chairs and LED candles. It is a nice effect. The stage is full of them too. Tonight is meant to be a tribute to Nina Simone. We shall if she turns in her grave or not. The set up seems good althoufh a door man scared me by appearing oit of a door and taking my temperature. It involve peripheral vision ans things pointing at heads. Anyhow, time for music and dancing. Well no dancing but my hands can dance away. (20 May 2021) Wel I am a faintly daft overly sentimental sod. I sat there and as the first few notes happpened, my eyes swelled. I have missed live music but it was not like I went to gigs weekly. Who knows. Anyhow there was a nice selection of Nina's contemporaries as well. At last was truely divine. So was Just Like a Natural Woman. A lovely evening of music with fun. It was also being back in Digbeth. It is truely an odd place. Formerly Victorian slums and factories which seemed to take a beating in WW2 and so there is lots of 1950s factories too. Yet in the past 15 years, an attempt has been made to turn it into an arty hub with cheap studios, niche shops and street art. It works well and has caused a lot of nightlife to appear. There are nice attempts to make up for a lack of lighting along the main night life street. Strings of lights are strung up above the street offering a carniva feel. However, you walk a street away and the light is difficult to find. Dark streets with the odd street light. It feels a bit dodgy for sure. It fuels the need for taxis out of the area. The joys of gentrifying part of the area and not the rest really. Anyhow, live music good!
