The funeral

<3 Sally

Sally came into my life about the same time as she did my wife's grandfather's. They met at an airport bar and were married about a year later. She wasn't the easiest person, but she lived life her way and her daughters quickly became R's sisters. We went down to Phoenix a lot and she was always a presence in our lives.

A few months ago she was diagnosed with cancer and she died last week. It was sudden, painful, and really fierce. The funeral was held today in a ranch near San Antonio. She wasn't embalmed or casketed. She was wrapped in white and placed on planks above the grave. After some words from her husband, her daughters, and a few others, she was lowered in the ground and we placed sunflowers over her. Then we went to another ranch and had a little party to celebrate her life.

Funerals are weird. They're somber and sad, but they also provide opportunities to see family and friends that have been missed because of being busy, or life in general. This year, I suppose, Covid is an excuse, but that's all it is, really. Speaking of, we were as careful as could be but still, I worry. I suppose I will be for a while on that front.

The day couldn't be more beautiful. I think Sally would've liked it that way.
