I just finished Photopia (by Adam Cadre, 1998), before reading the chapter of 50 Years of Text Games. Having missed all of this back in the day, it was a total joy. I don't want to spoiler it for anyone, and strongly recommend it to all who missed it.

Oh, I still remember the evening I first played Photopia, not long after it came out... I think of Varicella as the Real Cadre, but I guess it stuck with me less. Recommendation very much seconded.

I'd suggest you Anchorhead, albeit it's non-free. For libre games, the best ones are "All thing devours" (time travel puzzle, scifi), and Spiritwrap (funny Zorkian mix).
