EU Societas & EEIGs

Before Brexit, there were two EU-wide legal forms which could be registered in the UK, the "EU Societas" and the "EEIG", which stands for "European Economic Interest Group". These can no longer be created in the UK. There were only ever a few dozen of these entities created in the UK anyway, and during the Brexit process they were automatically converted into new forms called the "UK Societas" and "UK EIG".

An EU Societas, and now the UK Societas, is similar to a public limited company in the UK. It's a publicly tradable body corporate with a share capital, suitable for use as a major profit-making corporation. An EU Societas has a registered office in one EU jurisdiction but may re-register in another with little hassle. The UK Societas may be converted into a PLC.

The EEIG and its post-Brexit UK equivalent, the UK EIG, is some sort of potentially cross-border joint venture between firms and individuals.

It's not possible to create a UK Societas or a UK EIG. They're entirely residual forms, they aren't very many of them, and one day none will remain.
