Welcome to damaniel.xyz!

Welcome to my Gemini capsule, which like many a late-90s Geocities page, is under construction. As a fan of both older technology and technology lightweight enough to be used with older hardware, here I am.

Who am I?

I'm a 40-something software engineer who grew up right as the World Wide Web started blowing up - sitting at a crossroads between the BBS days and the Web days. As someone who spent a lot of time browsing the Web back then, I really miss how things were before the Web was so heavily commercialized. Modern web apps and websites have their place, but there's nothing quite like a collection of random thoughts and ideas being built up and floating around in a totally non-commercial, completely organic way.

I work with modern technologies (largely Node.js and Python plus a lot of Docker) as part of my day job, but for fun, I collect old computers and write software for them. Maybe not great software, but I do it anyway.

Stuff to see here

My latest pages:

My gemlog

DOS game information

I'll probably get around to writing down random thoughts as well, or perhaps stuff related to my other main hobbies (cross stitch, diamond painting, paint by number, video games, etc). I'd also like to set up a Gopherspace with some of the same information, so older computers (like the ones I target for my software) can see the content too.

Miscellaneous

In the spirit of lightweight technology, I also have a Gopherspace. It's here:

gopher://damaniel.xyz/

Also, like most developers, I have a Github. It mainly has DOS software, but I've also worked on a few other games and miscellaneous things over the years.

The DOS games page has links to the relevant repos for my games.
