Just pushed a little update to my personal site (which, to my shame, is still not on Gemini). I also updated my /now page with some deets of my recent retreat to the beautiful town of Hoi An here in Vietnam. https://martinrue.com

for giggles, i tried to convince my wife that the government is hiding aliens from us. went on for a while and she got really annoyed. i claimed that the intransparent handling of the alien issue by the government poses a problem. she told me that the only problem there is might be a husband who went insane. it was fun, but clearly she was annoyed af.

question: would you like to know when, where and how you die?

So SWPC and Spaceweather.com are taking note that there are CME heading towards earth from a recent solar eruption. They expect that they will impact the planet 10MAY24-11MAY24. As is normal it'll be overcast here in NY when something potentially interesting in the sky is happening.... Perhaps it'll cause some audio distortions as it has in years past on the 40m band...

In your experience what differentiates Gemini most from Gopher? And what protocol features led to this difference? My thoughts 1. Gemtext vs Plaintext * wrappable lines - mobile users * unified document format - weblike experience, rather than a link map + linkless text experience * inexpensive visual appeal vs expensive ASCII formatting 2. TOFU encryption vs nothing - inband ID - services like Station and BBS I'm not very well versed in Gopher, only reading a few glogs from time to time, so I'd apprecate the input of experienced users. Has there ever been anything as interesting as Station on it? If so, were the signups in-band?

i can get carried away with things and ignore everything around me when digging in. including basic needs like, drinking water. recently i added a reminder on my phone to take a quick 10 minute walk every afternoon. that has been a game changer. i loose some time, but get mental energy in return. why did it take me so long to take a break? (context: my work happens on a screen all day)

That there are around 10⁸² atoms in the universe is a great example of how we can’t think well about large numbers. That looks wrong to me at first glance.

Any BSD users here? I want to install some kind of BSD on some old laptop to check how it works. I've 0 exerience with BSD but I'm long time Linux user. I've heard that OpenBSD is better tested on a casual HW than much more popular FreeBSD, so I'm not sure which one should I choose anymore… I want to give some BSD a fair chance to impress me by really using it for some time so I think I'll find time to check only one of them.

First time gemini user here, it's been nice looking around here and seeing people interact in this pretty hidden portion of the web! If you have (found) any capsules that are worth checking out, feel free to share them! I would love to check them out.

How refreshing is it to escape the absolute endless noise of the modern web/life and experience small communities in a way we've largely lost.

What's your guys' preferred app for android - linux local network file share? I don't have dropbox on this side and I'd rather not write the thing myself, lol. Just something that can quickly share pictures and such.

Controversial opinion(?) I'm sick of finishing books with a strong sense that they were 300 pages just to appease the publisher/market, not because the author couldn't have been just as effective in 100 pages. I consider Derek Sivers a perfect counter example of this. Few books should need 300 pages.

Reply to \= gemini://auragem.letz.dev/devlog/20240506.gmi Gemini can handle any document type, not only gemtext. A new doc type needs to innovate. Adding a few markdown niceities to gemtext isn't especially compelling. It would be better to go with an existing solution like CommonMark, for which there are existing parsers out the wazoo. If you think the Gemini protocol doesn't handle streaming well, create a protocol that does streaming well, and offer it over the Gemini protocol. Titan is a good example of protocols playing nice with one another. Competing protocols like Spartan and Nex have not done especially well. A new protocol has to have a killer app quality to it. Good luck.

SO... If you're looking for something that's a bit of a brain bender to watch, saw Junk Head last night. It's a Japanese Stop Motion film. It's pretty wild and if you need resolution at the end of a movie, keep scrolling...

For long-form articles with links that would normally be inlined, where do folks prefer the links to be located? 1) immediately in-place (a new line interrupting the current sentence) 2) at the end of the current paragraph/section 3) at the end of the page 4) …somewhere else? And is it helpful to number the links, or is it too distracting in the text?

i tried to catch my drone out of the air. one of its legs was not properly fixed, so it glitched out of my hands and the propeller blades slit my finger joint three times. can’t type on a computer, but thumbs only typing on the phone works. 🙃 that’s a first for me…

After two more reinstalls, (Lol my boot USB was in BIOS mode. Figures.) I am finally properly dual-boot'd. Lagrange idents imported, most everything reasonably up to speed. Another evening spent fighting keyboard customisation with Wayland, I've simply fixed my X11 and abandoned the former for its /evil/ lack of kb customs- my poor wrists can't take all that shifting lol. Oh and a new Ryzen 5600 coming in a day or so, small upgrade over the old 3600.

gemini://scrollprotocol.us.to/software/profectus/ gemini://auragem.letz.dev/devlog/20240505.gmi A new fully-featured smallnet browser is being developed called Profectus. The beta just came out, but I can't get the precompiled binary to work. The Profectus page helpfully suggests installing some dependencies. I tracked down this command: $ sudo apt install libsdl2-dev 47 MB later, and Profectus still doesn't run: ./profectus: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL2_image-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Anyone having better luck?
