This is a test. Or perhaps not? I'm typing these words through SSH, feeling the latency on every keypress. Ideally I'd just FTP this file to SDF after I'm done writing my post, but who knows if I will fill this in with more text later on.
I only vaguely remembered the other day that I had a SDF account. I saw the "Last Updated" detail of my gopher page here: May 10th 2020. We all did strange things during those months. I was supposed to finish my thesis, but I was half doomscrolling (looking for updates on the pandemic), half digging into alternative internet protocols, hoping to escape the web.
This is how I titled my gopherhole:
_____ |_ _| | | _ __ ___ __ _ __ _ ___ | | | '_ ` _ \ / _` |/ _` |/ _ \ _| |_| | | | | | (_| | (_| | __/ |_____|_| |_| |_|\__,_|\__, |\___| | | __/ | _ __ | | __ _ ___ ___|___/ | '_ \| |/ _` |/ __/ _ \ | |_) | | (_| | (_| __/ | .__/|_|\__,_|\___\___| | | _ __ |_|__ | |/ _| ( _ ) ___ ___| | |_ / _ \/\ / __|/ _ \ | _| | (_> < \__ \ __/ | | \___/\/ |___/\___|_|_|
Back then, I was thinking of Joshua Meyrowitz's No Sense of Place, a phenomenal book that gave me a new way to think about the Internet at first, and about the concept of Place later on.
