Recently done 200 years of family genealogy at 162 pages with images.

Groff was easy and looked good and worked on multiple platforms.

I looked and done a few trees but with 1500 people it was just to hard to follow.

you can try to use

it is very easy and later with the program 'dot' you can generate the graph.

I did try graphs but it would not fit all and be readable even at poster board size.

I also did not have a printer on hand and I did not want to ask someone else to use an entire pack of paper and ink.

graphviz is great! difficult in my experience to achieve very precise layout though...

speaking of groff — Currently reading: UNIX Text Processing (1987). All about nroff and troff and other text processing tools. Super interesting!
