I think natively people compare themselves to others. I know have trouble stopping those thoughts. It's not bad to have them though, how could it? If you noticed someone else succeeding in a domain you're in, they know something you don't. I think the problem currently is that there are so many domains that people are active in that it's hard to distinguish what your comparing.
I think comparing yourself to another person is a tricky thing to do correctly. To which I mean where you don't end the comparison thinking you're a useless collection of skin cells. So from what I can tell, the simplest solution that gets a somewhat positive return is to just never compare yourself to anyone else. It seems a little useless, because we have this tool of comparison built in, but I haven't been able to do it correctly, and I know most others haven't too.
You can substitute the another person in you're comparison, to a past version of yourself. This can be helpful... but what is the time period that you use for the comparison. I don't agree with comparing yourself to who you were the yesterday, because there are two many unique events, and things get too specific that it become difficult to measure progress without being so anal you start pulling out hairs...
I think a possible time period is on a per Month basis. From what I noticed, it gives more freedom to what you can use to measure, and it loosens your life a bit so you're not so stressed about being perfect everyday.
