Just an emotional quick note. Not very structured
I've made installations of couple self-hosted apps. Made it in just for fun mode. With no real intentions to heavily use them.
I've installed nextcloud to share photos, videos and books. And suddenly my wife and my mom occupied nextcloud instance to upload photos and videos there... It appeared that they phones memory were overloaded with data and they had to delete them before taking new photos. Those nextcloud file sharing services started to feel really alive due too that.
I've installed invidious to watch youtube videos with no ads, tracking and doom-scrolling... After that I've even blocked all youtube domains... And I feel like I have no need for them anymore.
Then I've installed jellyfin. My hardware actually is too weak to transcode videos on the fly. But suddenly I found that jellyfin apps contain really good audioplayers inside... And it allows completely replace spotify or yandex music services...
Well... I feel empowered... I feel like I need no corporate clouds anymore... Not because I had intention to replace them, but because now I have better alternatives.
That is from end user perspective, of course. Invidious really just streaming media from goodle clouds.
And, suddenly, it is clear for me that regular people like my wify and mother - the people who "have nothing to hide" - are lacking server to upload photos... the server they trust and understand how and where the data is stored...
