I just learned about and started using gemini. It's given me feelings of new unexplored territory. Kinda like gopher but newer, for the new world. I like it so far. Its not really that hard to get used to I suppose, but it is different than using a www browser of course. I'm excited for it. I think the internet needs something like this. Recently I had been binging the wiby.me website's "suprise" function. It's pretty cool when you find old websites from the early 90's still online. The oldest one I've found there was from 1993. I think most of the really old ones were written on Next boxes so they all kinda had the same look. If you've ever been on a site ran by some dude who only uses openBSD then you'll know the familiar blinding white background with black text. I think they write their sites like that because its readable by text-based browsers.
Anyway gemini kinda reminds me of those old sites, except it seems easier to find peoples writings on here. Probably because we've learned from the past. I enjoy reading what people write about on gemini and want to start my own gemlog. Man it would have been cool if I knew about unix and linux and stuff back in the 90's when I was a kid. I would have learned so much. I had a DOS box and then a WIN95 computer back then. I remember using the CLI to poke around the directory and play games. Things are just simpler when its text only. I've been using linux for over 10 years now but within the past year have been getting into it pretty heavy. I've installed some of the "harder" distros and I run my own website on a server I set up. Right now I really like alpine linux. I run dwm on an arch install and all the unixy cli stuff instead of gui programs. It's been easier to just "think" about doing something and then actually doing it.
I guess where I'm getting at is I'm moving into a space where I'm simplifying how I use computers and I would like to do that with how I use the internet as well. I'm trying to simplify my life as a whole I suppose. I bought a old basic toyota truck with 10 million miles on it. I use old thinkpad computers, F91W watches, basically I want no-nonsense in my life and things that are easy to maintain and last a long time. So when I set up a server I learned some HTML to write my website. I got annoyed when it didn't work right or I couldn't get something to do what I wanted. It's kinda annoying to update webpages. So when it really comes down to it fancy HTML is just for the steez anyway and text is better/easier to just get the point across. I havn't done it yet on here but I wonder how you listen to music or look at images here on gemini? Its a new frontier to explore and I just got a brand new pair of moccasins and a raccoon tail hat.
