Can VLC play a mp3 file from a gemini url? Or any other media player for that matter... It looks like Kristall's player can play https urls but not gemini ones... I'm still tinkering with it but i'm running out of idea's

@clseibold that sounds good and very useful.

I'm looking for a way to make playlists of music that is already available on youtube.

Or other YT content, say short news items that are related to eachother that show multiple sides of a topic. I refuse to have a YT account, so it would be cool if i can make a playlist in gemspace somehow that other people can load without jumping trough hoops.

I share gemini://whatever.site/playlist/some.file someone else clicks on it and it just plays the list for that person. Without anione being 'accounted' by the machines. · 3 weeks ago

@maxheadroom Currently, AuraGem Music restricts a person's personal library to themself only for legal reasons (one can host their own music collection privately, but not share/distribute it). So one could very easily have private playlists, and I might try to add this feature soon.

However, There might still be a way to make playlists shareable, with the expectation that each song linked to would have to be in the person's personal music library.

For CC and public domain music, I have had the idea in the past to make a free "music store" on AuraGem that people can distribute their CC/PD music for free, so I might do that. This could pair well with playlists. · 3 weeks ago

@clseibold i'm looking for a way to make playlists in gemspace, I recently discovered Auragem after a gemnaut pointed me in the right direction. It would be cool if we could make a capsule with the basic gemni syntax that could be used as a playlist

Hola! AuraGem is back up :)

Btw, I believe Diohsc and Lagrange are the only two clients that I know to work with streaming audio, but some other clients should be able to download and then open in VLC.

Seeking in gemini is complicated. The protocol doesn't have any mechanism for streaming, so seeking is limited to seeking through what has already been downloaded, unless you use a mp3 file that tells you its length at the very beginning, then the player can seek into what hasn't been downloaded, but it will have to download the whole file up to that point to be able to play. Hopefully that makes sense. · 3 weeks ago

@m0xee i also discovered the lagrange appimage and that appears to do the trick. :-)) now i need to figure out how to export my identities... Kristall is not really helpful with that, as all is grayed out. Just my luck LOL.... keys ALWAYS screw things up for me. this key-stuff makes me so moody... · 1 month ago

@moxee i came accross that site several times, and i always back away at the point where i see that i need to compile i alsways tend to fall into a rabbit hole that i conflicts with other real life priorities. In a way i do want to dive in, but over time i learned that i need to have patience. I will have a look at the flatpack, as i wasn't aware of it yet, i hope that works for me. · 1 month ago

@maxheadroom You should definitely check out Lagrange: https://git.skyjake.fi/gemini/lagrange

I think I won't be mistaken if I say it's the most popular cross-platform Gemini GUI browser — I can't say I like it as it leads to a sort of monoculture, but I have to admit that skyjake did an amazing job with it: it's very feature-rich, but it manages to stay user-friendly and look very nice.

I've never used flatpaks myself, but the page I've linked above has a link to Flathub, I suppose it's available as flatpak too! · 1 month ago

@gritty Interesting… I have tried looking stuff up and found that AuraGem even had it's own section on Bubble at some point, but now it's gone. I wonder what the reason for that drama was. Gemini community is one of the most drama-free among those I'm aware of. And yet this still happens. I guess it can't be avoided completely 😩 · 1 month ago

👽 gritty

there was some drama with clseibold over on BBS and they deleted their login. may have dropped Gemini because of it. · 1 month ago

@userfxnet From the looks of it Kristall doesn't have that option. Didn't manage to install another client just yet, Kristall is the only one i could find with an app image · 1 month ago

👽 userfxnet

@maxheadroom ill look into it, but afaik no matter what client you're using you should be able to locally DL the file linked. I'll let you know what I run into. · 1 month ago

👽 maxheadroom

@userfxnet ill give it a try, the main goal would be a low-fi audio 'podcast' of some kind. so that would require a web client or an easy way for media players like VLC to reach it without having to use http transport. not sure if i can use other protocols for this ... like hypercore for instance. If my brain could even figure that out... lol for now i'm just exploring what is possible... It would be enough if there is a way to rightclick and download not sure if gemini supports that · 1 month ago

👽 userfxnet

@maxheadroom if you don't want to bother fetching mp3 files using a web-client, then you're in luck. IIRC, via command-line either local or remotely, you should be able to use a component known as "gemget" in order to fetch files and documentation from gemini file URLs. · 1 month ago

👽 maxheadroom

@wiliowf good idea, except that i don't like to sign up on those data hog burrows. :-) · 1 month ago

I know Lagrange can stream audio served over gemini. It's missing a couple things I think like seeking but it works. Most browsers should also let you just download the audio. If you want somewhere to test it out, there's gemini://rocketcaster.xyz · 1 month ago

👽 m0xee

@userfxnet Yes, it's indeed odd for someone who used to be so active to disappear like that. I also hope that everything's alright. · 1 month ago

👽 willowf

I don't think VLC can play from a Gemini URL, but you might be able to open an issue on their Gitlab to have support for Gemini added:

@m0xee yeah I noticed the capsule was down, too, after trying to check out the youtube proxy. I hope @clseibold the maintainer and host of the capsule is doing alright and all is well. I haven't seen much from 'em lately, come to think of it. · 1 month ago

👽 m0xee

Lagrange can stream music — at least that is how AuraGem used to work. It seems offline now, but it worked for me before. · 1 month ago

👽 maxheadroom

Or should one link to an mp3 that is on a http? · 1 month ago
