Slowing Down

Fall is my favourite season of the year, especially, as has been the case this year, if there's a good taper, gradually cooling down as opposed to a sudden drop.

It's cool, but not cold, during the day. No frost warnings at night. I've got some garden work to do - taking off all the green cherry tomatoes and bringing them in to ripen, then digging up the plants, and the potatoes, turning off the outside water and draining the taps.

I don't have any proof, but it feels like I do more writing in the fall and winter, too. I wonder if it's just a matter of free time? Once I'm done running I've got time in the mornings before work, which can go to practice, or writing, whether that's here or poems. It always seems like I'm writing and updating my master spreadsheet of finished work all winter. I've barely touched it this summer. That seems to be my way.

I'm enjoying the weather while I can. I'm done running for the year. Just ran my last race. A few more weeks and it'll be proper cold. We'll get first snows. And maybe it'll stick, or maybe it won't, but then we'll have the snow tires on the car, and shortly after the back yard will be impassable, and then I'll be sitting at the kitchen table in the dark at 4:30pm, supper simmering in the slow cooker, writing gemlogs in vi for spectral, invisible you.
