Severe Weather Awareness Month copy [IMG]
[1]Severe weather remains the biggest, and most common, threat Kentuckians face on a daily basis. If we need a reminder, we only have to look back to the severe storms and tornadoes that ravaged the Commonwealth last February 29 and March 2, 2012, leaving 25 dead, hundreds homeless and thousands of homes damaged. With that, Governor Steve Beshear has signed a proclamation (59KB) declaring March 2013 as Severe Weather Awareness Month, urging all Kentuckians to be aware, and be prepared, for severe weather.

Kentuckians face many weather related challenges throughout the year, from tornadoes, flooding, straight line winds, lightning and winter storms. Every household should be prepared to face these challenges at any given time.
As a part of Severe Weather Awareness Month on Tuesday, March 5 at approximately 10:07 a.m. EST, the National Weather Service (NWS), partnering with KYEM and Kentucky Broadcasters Association (KBA), will conduct a tornado test message which will activate NOAA Weather Radios and broadcast media. Schools, businesses, government agencies and citizens across the Commonwealth are encouraged to participate in the annual Statewide Tornado Safety Drill. A survey will be available online, allowing KYEM and other officials to measure and improve preparedness for such occasions.
Each month the calendar will help you learn important things to do during severe weather. Things that will help keep you and your loved ones safe. You can also become an honorary member of the KYEM Severe Weather Program. Itβs really simple and KYEM will even send you a nice membership certificate that you can frame and hang at home!
