Italian Translation

1. The Gnuserland (gnuserland (a) mailbox.org)

Hi All,

I'd like to help for this project and I've started the document
translation into Italian. I already sent several capsules but since
everything is very new for me (collaborating to a project, translating,
using GIT) I am not sure If I followed the procedure properly.

So far I haven't received any feedback or notice by Solderpunk, I am not
anxious to see my "effort" ASAP but I would like to understand if my
contribute is arriving and if it is arriving at the right place.

Best regards,

Gnuserland

Hello!

What a coincidence, another Italian user! There is already a group
that's working on the Italian translations, we've got a IRC channel
#gemini-italia over at freenode if you want to join the effort :)

I have the feeling that Solderpunk is either very busy or not
currently interested (the development of MollyBrown has the same
issues). I suggest that you publish your work on your own capsule,
even if it's not "official", it may interest some people.

For your information, here are the 13 URLs tagged "italian" right now,
as found by the Lupa crawler:

and with lang = 'it-IT' there's also gemini.iosa.it, managed by steko,
probably the first Italian capsule :)

Yes, a case of over-specification: unless the italian used on this
capsule is really specific to Italy, there is no need to over-tag. To
quote RFC 5646:

  1. Use as precise a tag as possible, but no more specific than is
       justified. Avoid using subtags that are not important for
       distinguishing content in an application.

       * For example, 'de' might suffice for tagging an email written
          in German, while "de-CH-1996" is probably unnecessarily
          precise for such a task.

=> gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/rfc-mirror/rfc5646.txt RFC 5646 on language tags

That's actually a good point, and thanks for the RFC reference! I admit
I've never read it, but happy to have guessed right :)

Anyway, I assume most people picked up it-IT without knowing about RFC
5646 and as a translation of the (I think) more common en-US (and maybe
also due to how the $LANG variable is usually set up on the unices).
Maybe it's worth to drop a line or two in the best practice about this?

Cheers,

Nice, I'll try to catch you next week however the timezone might be an
issue since I am not living in Italy nor in Europe currently.

See you soon

Or it may be that you wrote to him, he replied but you did not get the
answer because your email server is badly configured and rejects some
emails. For instance, I can write to you only throught the list since
your server arbitrarily rejects mine:

In the mean time, I've added that to my capsule:
<gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/gemini/tag-wisely.gmi> People are free
to copy-and-paste from it in any documentation.

Since many people make the error, I've modified Lupa to have separate
statistics, per language only and per full language tag
<gemini://gemini.bortzmeyer.org/software/lupa/stats.gmi>:

Most common languages

Is there a way to find (and read) capsules of a specific language tag?

I use SQL queries against the Lupa database:

lupa=> SELECT DISTINCT Capsules.name FROM Urls,Capsules WHERE Urls.capsule
= Capsules.id AND lang = 'de';
           name
