Rory Mooney, 21 Mar
A man who was approached by police in relation to failing to stop
became violent and kicked and punched several officers, Derry
Magistrate's Court heard today.
Luke McCormack (26) of no fixed abode admitted a series of charges
arising from the incident on February 2 this year.
The court heard that police were dealing with an incident and observed
a vehicle that they were interested in due to a failure to stop.
As an officer approached the vehicle in traffic McCormack alighted and
kicked the officer in the stomach.
He then fought with several other officers before being subdued and
handcuffed.
He was charged with assault on three police officers, obstructing an
officer and resisting as well as disorderly behaviour on the Dungiven
Road.
Defence counsel Stephen Mooney said that the best he could say in
mitigation was that this man had pleaded guilty at an early stage.
McCormack was jailed for five months.
