The Girlfriend

Kate

Lee's girlfriend stood furiously, arms crossed. He knew Kate's temper, and had not been looking forward to this moment.

"You stood me up. You actually stood me up! I waited for you at the restaurant for like half an hour! I was worried about you. What if something happened to you in the woods?"

"I know, I'm sorry. I lost track of time."

"You never lose track of time though. You are like a clock! And in the woods, you always know where you are, what trails you are on. And you have your Garmin GPS."

Lee sighed. She was not going to like this. But he resolved never to lie to his girlfriend. He'd seen how lies can tear relationships apart.

"I... went on new trails this time. Something strange happened out there."

Kate flicked her long blonde hair to one side, looking skeptical.

"There was... singing. I was out in the middle of nowhere, and the singing sounded like it was really close. I went to find out what it was."

"Did you find the person? Was it a man or a woman?"

"It was a woman singing, but I couldn't make out the words. I never found her though."

"So you stood me up looking for a singing girl?" Kate did not look pleased, and Lee knew it was as lame as it sounded.

"I was just curious. I had no idea how much time had gone by. The singing was in a different language. But it wasn't Spanish, or French, or any of the romance languages. It didn't sound Indian or Japanese or Chinese either. It was something that I'd never heard before."

"And that makes it better?"

"No... Kate, it was weird. The song really didn't sound natural. I was curious, I went to look for it, and it felt like I was looking for ten minutes, maybe fifteen. Then the singing stopped, I looked around, and I noticed that it was turning dark."
