Sharing the love for playing retro videogames.
I have just uploaded a new port of the Octo CHIP-8 emulator by John Earnest to small ESP32 devices with touchscreens. My hope is to create a fun device that allows playing and - ultimately - writing CHIP-8 games completely on such a device, without the need for a connected PC. Here is the repo: [https link] - comments and pull requests welcome.

I guess some folks might like this: Every now and then I stream retro Mac games (like SimCity, SimAnt, Tetris, Glider, etc) and keep the VODs on a PeerTube channel: [https link]

By far the longest and oldest game I've played is the transport tycoon game, now available for free as OpenTTD. 20 years of gameplay and even now, every once in a while, I binge on it. Chris Sawyer rocks!

Last saturday, my daughter and I played Magical Drop, a beautiful, nice, funy and challenger videogame from Data East and SNK, for the Neo Geo game devices. I love that game, it helps to develop important executive skills, like Candy Crush but without garbage.

30th Anniversary of DOOM — It's a big anniversary today for the original DOOM: first released on December 10, 1993 on MS-DOS. This game needs no introduction, although I'm increasingly wondering how well known it is to the younger folks. It keeps popping up in various places, at least when people make it run on unexpected devices and in silly places like this: Personally, I have a deep connection with the game as it...

Airport, a free/libre homebrew PS1 video game — This is an older video game of mine I wrote back in 2016-17 for the original PlayStation, with a few minor improvements and bugfixes during 2020. It can run under a PS1 emulator, such as PCSX-r, or a modchipped console (although some software exploits were found just a few years ago). While the source code quality is way below my current standards, I enjoy playing it from time to time. I hope you also like it. The software is licensed under the...

Quake II remaster is out for all platforms. The game brings the original Quake II with some graphical enhancements as well as all the expansions, and the N64 version. (On all versions, not just the Switch one.) Not a bad get for $10. The original Quake is also on sale right now for $4 if you don't have it.

I'm currently playing pokemon crystal (3ds virtual console), my goal is to get all the following pokemon: lapras (done), suicune, entei, raikou, lugia, ho-oh, celebi. I'm stuck with the elite four at the moment, my current party being kadabra (50), sneasel (35), growlithe (32), rhydon (36), lapras (34) and gloom (35). kadabra is doing the heavy work, by leveling up until fainting and then giving the other party members a bit of exp (with share exp). I guess I don't have another choice but to...

Inselkampf — This isn't *quite* retrograming, but I suppose it counts now. Plus there's not an s/gaming yet, so... anyone ever play Inselkampf back in the day ? It launched around 2006. It was mostly a text-based game, with a few 16-color-ish glyphs, maps, etc. I definitely played this for a couple of years. It was a very slow-moving game. You'd send some warships, then come back in a couple of days to see how it went. Things escalated once people really built up their islands after a year...

What are your favorite PS2 titles? — While some may not consider it "retro" as such, as a younger millennial I spent most of my childhood gaming on a Sony PlayStation 2. I was especially fond of the Jak and Daxter and Splinter Cell series. Since re-acquiring a fat PS2 as an adult, I've been eager to check out some of the more obscure (in the US at least) titles out there. I've been working my way through King's Field IV and Nightmare of Druaga lately. I'd love to hear what other folks'...

Crusader of Centy (Sega Genesis) — Crusader of Centy just dropped for subscribers to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion membership! I've seen a few YouTube channels call this out as one of Genesis' best games, including the SNES Drunk channel. It's pretty clearly a Zelda clone, but with it's own twist with useful and unique animal companions. I had a ROM all ready to go, but personally I just don't like gaming on my laptop (and I haven't purchased one of those handheld emulator devices yet)...

Terminal games What are your favourite games playable in a terminal? Here are a few I've loved and/or respected: Interactive fiction / text adventure games, e.g. Spider & Web, Varicella, Worlds Apart, Galatea, Counterfeit Monkey, Hadean Lands nethack, crawl, brogue asciiportal alienwave hunt mdg (sadly defunct multiplayer dungeon crawler on sdf) spellbinding and other gemini games (if they should count)

What is considered retro? I feel like this might be a personal definition in some cases. I've got a 3ds that's been broken for ages, hoping to get it to a repair shop this week so I can finally play a bunch of my old 3ds games. To me this feels retro because the system is 12 years old already. At the same time it was jarring to go to the retro game shop a few weeks ago and see a bunch of wii u games and systems, even though that's 11 years old now.
