Getting Started

I've had this domain and VPS for a while now and I've been meaning to start a gemlog with it, but I keep running into a problem: I'm not sure how to get started. But I might as well just go for it and see what happens.

About Me

I'm a university student studying software engineering. Like most of the people here probably, I'm interested in technology and find big, corporatized software systems offputting.

The Problem

The difficult thing in starting a gemlog is deciding what to write. Will I mostly focus on tech and other "safe" topics? Will I try to talk more about my other interests or my personal life? Maybe write some short stories? Hard to say. There's a good chance that I'll do a bit of everything, I haven't really decided what I want this to look like yet.

Gemlog or Wiki?

Something else I've been thinking about is whether I want to aim to make this site mainly a gemlog or if I want to structure it more like a wiki. The advantage of a gemlog structure is that it would be easy to serialize entries to put them in a feed. It works pretty well for disorganized "stream of consciousness" type things. But, a wiki-like structure would give me an opportunity to create a more organized archive of my thoughts.

I think that a bit of each is a good approach for me. I could have a section of the site set up in a serialized gemlog format for pages that work best with that, and then the rest of the site could be filled with more well-organized thoughts that I can go back and edit/expand on over time. I've seen some people using tags in their gemlogs to help categorize entries. I might do this too, but it wouldn't replace having a dedicated wiki full of thoughts that I can go back and refine over time.
