Timex Expedition Camper

General Info

My Thoughts

Price

I paid £29.97, but the RRP is £40 according to Amazon's listing. £30 is a fair price - I'm not so sure about £40, though.

Looks

The Expedition Camper is a pretty simple looking watch, and that does go with its price. It's black with a light grey 38mm diameter face, with black hour markings. The minute and hour hands are black with light grey lines in the middle which are the same sort of translucent as the main face. The second hand is black. There's a date window at 3 o'clock.

In the top middle of the face is the Timex logo with the Expedition logo, bigger, underneath it. The Indiglo and water resistance markings are at the bottom on either side of the number 6.

The strap goes with the colour scheme of the timepiece itself, with it being mainly black with grey accents, with a Timex logo and two Expedition logos.

Build Quality

The Expedition Camper is made of resin, which seems appropriate for its price point. The strap is made of some sort of fabric with some velcro to secure it. The protective piece above the dial is acrylic according the listing on the US Timex store. Unsurprising given it is meant to be cheap, but it does mean it's more vulnerable to scratches than real glass. It feels light but still pretty good.

The face seems a bit misaligned with the case, which could just be an issue for my unit in particular. It's not something you'd notice at a glance but studying the face for a bit longer made me see the misalignment.

The strap is very nice for £30 and is made of nylon. It's not too thick but not too thin. For the price I don't think you could do much better.

Feel

It fits pretty snug on my wrist and doesn't impact me being able to move my hand around without feeling any pain, unlike the Casio F-91W. It doesn't move around nearly as much as my Galaxy Fit2 - I don't have to push it back up to its usual position on my wrist when I do normal actions like pouring water into a mug. The strap goes all the way through and doesn't leave the stainless steel back exposed so you don't get a freezing cold bit of steel on your wrist at 9am.

The crown feels decent but after winding it for a while it can absolutely hurt your fingers, it certainly did hurt mine. More on that in a second.

When you push the crown in to activate Indiglo it doesn't feel very definitive.

Functionality

The watch seems to keep track of time perfectly fine so far in the three hours that I've had it running. The second hand does not align with the markers absolutely perfectly but from a glance it won't matter much. I'm no watch snob so this isn't really an issue for me.

When I first pulled it out of the box, the date was set to the 17th, which is a few days ahead. Winding it backwards did nothing, so I had to advance the date 28 days to get it back to the 14th, which took about an hour and made my fingers rather unhappy. Still, I did eventually get it set to the correct date and time using my phone and started it on the zero mark at 3:15:00 PM. So far, it is pretty much in lockstep with my phone's clock.

The date, according to Timex, begins to advance each evening at 10pm and in my experience it does, and snaps into place at around the 12:30 AM mark. They say it actually finishes around 2 AM.

The Indiglo backlight is honestly all I could ask for in terms of lighting. It lights the face super evenly and is way better than the piss poor LED on the F-91W. Timex definitely know what they're doing here.

I haven't tested the water resistance but Timex rates it for 100 metres (10 bar).

Conclusion

For a cheap watch that's analogue, has a super nice backlight and a 100 metre water resistance rating, this is pretty damn good. Timex US want $35.99 for it but I've seen it as low as £30 here. Some people may not like the light grey face, so there is a black version with different hands that are red in colour, but it otherwise appears to be identical in specs.

Update: It seems to lose time pretty fast, within 7 hours it fell two seconds behind, which is really weird. It could be the battery but not sure.

Where To Buy

Mine came from Amazon. Timex don't seem to have this specific colour option on their website anymore.
