A24 Movies

Midsomer

I went into this movie knowing nothing about the plot. I had an inkling of an idea that it was a horror movie, but beyond that I didn't know what else to expect. And I have to say, I'm kinda glad I went in with a clean slate.

This movie is another stunner from A24, with its bright, colourful setting and gorgeous wide, long shots. Bright, daytime horror movies are an interesting genre twist I enjoy. The acting was stellar, and the plot kept me engaged from the beginning. I really enjoyed the subtlety of some of the visual effects throughout the movie. By the time I recognized these small changes the movie was over and I was ready to start it again to see what I missed. Another A24 thumbs up from me.

Greenknight

This film was incredibly beautiful. Dev Patel was masterful in his depiction of a character finding himself well out of his depth. I'm not familiar with classic Arthurian stories, so I didn't pick up on some of the nuances others might have, but I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

This movie was recommended to me by everyone I know who'd watched it. And I'm so glad they did. This is definitely one of my favourite movies of the year. All the actors were amazing, and Michelle Yeoh shines bright once more. The story is extremely compelling with plenty of humour throughout. If you haven't seen this movie yet, do yourself a favour and watch it!

Saint Maud

This movie was messsed up, but in the best way. Like all A24 movies, everything shot was stunning, oozing with atmosphere. The acting was also phenomenal, with the main character really creeping me out from beginning to end. The story was interesting I felt engaged the entire time, eager to find out what was going to happen next. And to top it all off, the movie was only 1h24m! I am a huge proponent of 90 minute movies, and Saint Maud fit the bill splendidly.

Highlife

This was a weird movie. You're kind just plopped into the story and things begin to reveal themselves as the movie goes along. Robert Pattinson is awesome, I definitely felt his exhaustion and loneliness throughout the movie. There's some strange sexual stuff going on in the story, but I honestly don't remember much of it. I'd say it was a pretty cool movie overall, beautiful visual effects and great acting all around. But ya, really weird from start to finish.

Hereditary

I went into this movie expected a really scary horror movie. Instead, I got a tour de force performance by Toni Collette and a very engaging psychological supernatural thriller. There are still scenes from this movie that are stuck in my mind, and not the typical scenes from a horror movie. The story's pace kept me on the edge of my seat, never revealing the entire picture of what's happening, but giving just enough to keep you engaged until the end. Definitely a favourite of mine and one that I'll be returning to again in the future.
